What should I do if the Aquastop function in my washing machine is activated?
Modern washing machines are equipped with flood protection. The so-called "Aquastop" system constantly monitors the hoses, pipes, and tank for leaks and, if a leak is suspected, blocks the cycle by stopping the machine. The power is cut off, and water intake is stopped, preventing flooding and short circuits. However, this safety feature has its downsides: if the Aquastop system is activated, you'll have to call a technician to repair the sensor. We'll discuss how to resolve the issue without outside help below.
Let's find out the reason why the system was triggered?
Most modern washing machines are protected from flooding by Aquastop, a system that operates at both ends of the machine. An electromagnetic valve is installed under the top cover in the inlet hose, and a sensor with a float is installed in the pan. When a leak occurs, a “chain reaction” begins:
- water flows down the body and tank into the tray;
- when the water level rises, the float rises;
- as soon as the float “stands” vertically, the sensor is triggered;
- a signal about a leak and a command to stop the intake are sent to the valve mechanism;
- the valve stops the water from pouring in;

- the control board stops the cycle;
- The machine switches off in an emergency.
The Aquastop system is activated if too much water has accumulated in the machine’s tray.
Aquastop rarely activates without a reason. A leak is most often the culprit behind the activation of the protection system. Excess liquid accumulates in the sump due to a number of issues:
- breach of tightness of the inlet or drain hose (torn or torn off the tee);
- loosening of the fastening on the pipes;
- tank defect;
- the powder receiver is clogged (the pipe in the hopper is clogged or a foreign object is stuck);
- oil seal shift;
- deformation of the tympanic cuff.
When the flood protection is triggered, the washing machine not only stops the cycle, but also displays the corresponding message on the display. error codeModels without a screen indicate a malfunction with an indicator. In any case, the answer to the question of what to do is obvious: find and fix the cause.
How to fix the problem?
After activating Aquastop, the machine requires diagnostics and repair. It is necessary to turn off the control system, “drain” the machine and identify the location of the leak. Ideally, you should hire a professional, but it's much cheaper to find and fix the leak yourself. If you decide to do it yourself, follow these instructions:
- we stop the running cycle (we turn the programmer to the “Off” position);
- turn on the “Drain” program (if the instrument panel freezes, then empty the drum manually through the trash filter);
- we de-energize the machine by removing the cord from the socket;
- tilt the washing machine body and pour out the water from the tray;
- We begin diagnosing the system.

Aquastop will automatically deactivate once the tray is empty, and the float will return to its resting position. However, the situation will reoccur during the next wash cycle if the cause of the leak isn't addressed. To identify the culprit, you'll need to check all the weak points in the filling and drainage systems.
The first step is to inspect the inlet hose. It often cracks or comes loose from the clamps, causing water leaks. Next, check the tightness of the remaining hoses on the machine, those connected to the tank, the powder receptacle, and the pump. The main drainage sleeve must also be examined.
The next components of the drainage system to check are the pump and the volute. If they fail, water flow stops, the machine overflows, and a leak occurs. Next, inspect the seal and dispenser for cracks. If the cause is not found, the washing machine must be disassembled to inspect the seal and the drum. If the AquaStop is activated but the tray is dry, the sensor itself is faulty. Test the system with a multimeter to ensure it is intact and functioning properly. If everything is visually OK, then replacing the controller is recommended.
