Ariston washing machine won't turn on – reasons

Ariston washing machine won't turn onWhen a washing machine shows no signs of life, meaning it won't turn on, most people start to think it's broken, requiring expensive repairs or even an unexpected, expensive purchase. In reality, things may not be so serious, as the causes of this malfunction vary, and some can be resolved without calling a technician. Let's discuss why an Ariston washing machine won't turn on.

Causes of malfunction

Any washing machine can fail to turn on at some point, without giving any indication of a problem. If your washing machine won't turn on, there may be a number of possible causes:

  • faulty socket, plug or power outage;
  • the machine's power cord burned out;
  • the interference filter or start button burned out;
  • electronic module malfunction;
  • The wires inside the machine are broken.

Electrical check

A common reason why a washing machine won't turn on is a power outage. It's possible you've scheduled a load of laundry, started the machine, and the power is out without you even realizing it. It's easy to check. Determine whether the power is out only in your apartment or the whole building is out; perhaps the problem lies with your electrical wiring.

The second problem that can cause this malfunction is a faulty outlet. The contacts in the outlet may burn out if it's old. The outlet's functionality can be tested by connecting a simple table lamp to it. If the lamp does not light up, or lights up but blinks, then the problem is clear - it's time to change the socket. Otherwise, you need to look for the cause in the washing machine itself.

power cordThe first thing to check is the power cord, specifically the plug. The cord can be damaged by voltage overload or severe bending. To check it, use a multimeter to test the three wires running inside the insulation. We described how to do this correctly in the article. Electrolux washing machine won't turn onThe FPS test is performed in a similar manner, but to check the network capacitor, you'll need to open the top cover of the Ariston washing machine.

Why do you even need a line capacitor? A modern Ariston automatic washing machine is simply crammed with various electrical components and electronics. Moreover, its electronics are quite sensitive; the slightest voltage surge can cause harm. The capacitor's job is to partially dampen these voltage fluctuations, thereby saving expensive microcircuits. If the FPS burns out, power is cut off to the washing machine's main modules, and as a result, the machine won't turn on. How do you test the capacitor?FPS

  1. If the washing machine is already turned off, take a Phillips screwdriver and go around the back of the washing machine.
  2. In the upper right and left corners of the case, you need to unscrew the two screws that hold the top cover of the machine.
  3. To remove the top cover from the washing machine, place your palms on it and push it towards you, then lift it up.
  4. At the top, under the cover at the end of the power cord, you will see a barrel-shaped part; this is the capacitor.
  5. You need to remove the wires from its contacts, and then remove the capacitor itself from the housing.
  6. Set the multimeter to continuity mode and test the FPS for breakdown. If there's no breakdown, you can measure its resistance. If it shows 0 or 1, the part is burned out.

Warning! Your washing machine may burn out if you use non-original parts, and the FPS is no exception. To ensure your Ariston washing machine works properly in the future, purchase and install a genuine capacitor.

Button malfunction

If you've had your Ariston washing machine for a while and the operating conditions are quite harsh, it's not surprising that its on/off button may burn out. Generally, if your washing machine model doesn't have a moisture-resistant front panel, you should take measures to prevent water from getting on the switches and buttons. Otherwise, the contacts will oxidize, and the button will stop working.

The on/off button is checked in turn immediately after the power cord and the FPS. With the top cover now removed, let's move on to the button we're interested in. Removing the power button is very simple. First, unclip the wires from the button housing. Then, using a flathead screwdriver, carefully pry up the latch assembly and remove the button.

The first thing to do after removing the button is to test it and then measure its resistance. If the button doesn't ring or doesn't produce a consistent resistance value, it's faulty and needs to be replaced. Some technicians recommend cleaning the button contacts and then testing it again; there's a chance it will work. However, we recommend replacing it; it's more reliable.

An on/off button for an Ariston washing machine can be ordered online at a relatively low cost.

Checking the control board

The problem with an Ariston washing machine not turning on could very well be the control board microchip. The control module of this washing machine is quite complex, and identifying which specific component has burned out is practically impossible unless you're an expert. Nevertheless, an inspection of the control board is essential. In some cases, the control board may be faulty, which is immediately visible, as in the picture below.

burnt out control board

To inspect the board, we need to remove it. How do we do this?

  • remove the powder tray;
  • next to the niche for the cuvette we find 2 screws and unscrew them;
  • now we unscrew 4 more screws from the top (on the end of the panel under the top cover of the washing machine);
  • carefully pull the panel up and remove it.
  • We use a screwdriver to pry up the plastic latches on the panel and disassemble it.
  • Having disassembled the panel housing, we take out the board.

Important! When disassembling the control panel, it's best not to touch the wires to avoid any confusion later.

Carefully inspect the board. If there are no visible defects, there are likely hidden issues that a specialist can identify. Bring the board to a service center for inspection and repair.

Other malfunctions

control board dialingPeople often misdiagnose the problem with their washing machine. They say the machine won't turn on, but in reality, it turns on but doesn't start any cycles. That is, after turning it on, the machine doesn't respond to anything. On Ariston washing machines, the "key" indicator may also flash. This indicates a breakdown of the control board and a malfunction of the command device. With such a breakdown, it is better to contact a specialist rather than try to complicate the situation.

There are a number of other reasons why your washing machine might not work, but it still turns on. There are many possible causes, and the symptoms vary. We won't cover them all in this article, but if you're interested and want to know what to do, read on. Why is the washing machine not working??

So, when your washing machine won't turn on, first check the electrical system in your home, and then take it apart. And only if you know how to use a multimeter. It's best to leave any problems with the washing machine's electronics to a professional. Good luck!
