There's no water in the washing machine - what should I do?

The washing machine does not fill with water.Have you started washing and noticed that water isn't filling, or is filling very slowly? These problems sometimes occur. This usually happens after a few years of using the washing machine, or after problems with cold water. How can you identify this problem?

Usually, everything is obvious. You turn on the washing machine, set the program, and press start. After that, water should start filling. But what if water doesn't fill the washing machine, or it does, but very slowly? In this article, we'll look at the main causes of this problem and how to fix them yourself.

Reasons for failure

The first reason would be the lack of cold water or weak pressure. If the water pressure is low, the water will flow very slowly. This can cause the laundry process to take hours. Try turning the cold water on full blast in the faucet and check the flow rate. There is no water in the tapIf the flow is very weak or there's no water at all, then we've found our problem. Of course, we can't solve it directly. After all, we don't control the water supply to the house. There are two possible solutions:

  1. Just wait for the water to come back on. Sometimes the water is turned off during various repairs.
  2. Call your housing office and inquire about the cause of the problem and the timeframe for fixing it. It's also possible that they're unaware of any water supply issues in your building. So, just in case, it's best to call. This will increase the chances that your plumbing will be working properly again quickly.

The water supply is closed or not fully open

Check the position of the tap that controls the flow of water into the washing machine. If it's closed, or open but not all the way, all you need to do is open it. This might answer the question of why water isn't getting into the washing machine. This step will solve the problem. The faucet itself may also be faulty. In this case, it may not open (stuck), or the valve may simply spin. In this case, you'll need to replace the faulty faucet with a working one. These faucets are sold at plumbing supply stores.

The hatch is not closed tightly or the lock is faulty

Try opening and closing the door by pressing firmly. It's possible that the door wasn't closed. The washing machine won't start washing while it's open.

There may also be faulty locking or latching issues. If the washing machine door doesn't stay closed, the guide located under the locking tab may be damaged. This can occur with prolonged use. Repeated opening and closing of the door can damage the hinges. This can cause the door to become misaligned.

You can watch the video instructions for replacing the lock:

Another possible damage is that the tongue (clamp), which looks like a hook, may change its position.

That is, it becomes warped. When warped, it doesn't fit into the proper hole and doesn't lock the hatch closed. This malfunction occurs when the metal rod falls out.

This rod is located on the inside of the washing machine door. It holds the tab in the correct position. If it falls out, the tab will no longer be in the correct position. To fix this problem, you need to disassemble the door and return the rod to its correct position.

Filter or inlet valve defective

Washing machine inlet valve filter

Another possible cause is that the filter may be so clogged that it's blocking water flow. In this case, turn off the water supply and remove the inlet hose. This is where the hose connects to the washing machine. The inlet valve filter is located here. It looks like a fine mesh. If this mesh is clogged, it needs to be cleaned and rinsed. If it's fine, we can continue to investigate the cause of the poor water supply.

It's possible your intake valve itself is faulty. It can be repaired, but it's much easier to just buy a new one and replace the faulty one.

The most unpleasant thing, perhaps, would be a breakdown of the control module. In this case, specialized skills are essential. Self-repair or replacement of the module is not recommended for those without specialized knowledge and skills. Therefore, in this case, it is necessary to contact specialists. The module is one of the most expensive parts of the washing machine. Most appliance repair services prefer to replace the module rather than repair it. This repair can be quite expensive, but is often cheaper than buying a new machine.

Heating element and level sensor

Another problem that can cause this breakdown is a faulty heating element, also known as a heating element. You can see how to replace it in the following video:

A broken water level sensor could also be the cause. This device stops the water intake when the machine's water level has reached the required level. If the water level sensor is broken, it must be replaced with a new one. A video instruction on the entire replacement process is included below:

Good luck with your home appliance repairs!

We couldn't get the filter out. We tried rinsing it out with a small enema. It worked. It pours like Niagara.

After turning on the washer, it starts filling with water for 2-5 seconds and then stops. Then it stops and nothing happens. I checked the water level sensor. If I remove it from the circuit (simply unplug it), the water fills and the machine doesn't stop. Could this be a faulty water level sensor?

There's debris in the corrugated tube from the drum to the drain pump. It's preventing the ball from closing. Turn the machine on its side and you'll see the corrugated tube underneath. Remove it, clean it, and put it back.

If you have an Ariston, there's a problem with the control module. Either bad connections or a voltage issue.
