The washing machine does not drain water, how to fix it?
Have you decided to do your laundry and noticed that your washing machine isn't draining? Unfortunately, this is one of the most common problems. It can occur for various reasons.
But before we discuss the causes, let's look at how this problem manifests itself and what types it can occur in:
- Water drainage occurs extremely slowly, and a program failure may occur at the same time.
- During the program's execution, the process stalls at the point where the water should drain. The water doesn't drain.
- Some washes drain water, others do not.
- During the main wash everything is fine, but during the rinse there is no drainage.
- The spin mode is locked after draining.
What could be the causes of this problem? Let's list them:
- The connecting pipe (between the tank and the pump) is clogged with debris.
- There was a foreign object in the pump.
- The pump filter is clogged with debris.
- The pump broke.
- Clogged drain or trap.
- The hose through which water is drained is clogged.
How to fix a washing machine yourself?
Before repairing your washing machine, you must disconnect it from the power source. Don't neglect safety precautions. First, unplug the machine from the power source.
Cleaning the filter

Next, let's check the filter. It's located at the bottom of the housing, on the front side. Some water may spill onto the floor during operation, so it's best to have a rag or small empty container ready. If you notice the filter is clogged, simply clean it of any foreign matter. This may solve the problem.
For clarity, we'll demonstrate the entire process of removing a washing machine filter on video:
We check the pipe

But what if the filter is removed and the problem persists? That is, the washing machine isn't draining? In this case, we move on to the next step of the repair. Specifically, cleaning the hose connecting the washing machine's tub to the pump.
To access it, you need to unscrew the bolts that secure the drain assembly. After that, remove the hose and the retaining clamp. Then, drain the water from the hose into a prepared container.
After this, you need to check to see if the pipe is clogged with any debris. To do this, gently squeeze it in different places. If you feel a blockage, remove it. After this, reassemble the entire assembly.
Impeller
If this doesn't solve the problem, then we'll move on to the next possible malfunction. Now we'll check to see if the pump impeller is jammed. It's located directly behind the filter. If even a small object gets caught in it, it could cause a malfunction. So, first, try spinning the impeller. If it spins and no foreign objects are visible, then it's fine. If you find something obscured, like a coin or a button, remove it. If this doesn't help, then the drain pump (pump) remains to be checked.
How to check and replace the pump?
To check the drain pump, remove the filter, as you did earlier. Then set the spin cycle. Illuminate the filter opening. A regular flashlight is the easiest way to do this. If the pump impeller does not move, it means that the pump (drain pump) is broken. After all, we've already checked it for foreign objects. And that's the only explanation for why the impeller isn't rotating. Now that we've identified the problem, we move on to the next step—replacing the broken part.
But before that, we need to purchase this very part. Most washing machines use standard parts, so we can easily find the new pump we need. If you don't know where to buy one, the easiest way is to search online. Just type "buy washing machine pump." Then find the sellers in the search results, call them, and buy a new pump.
So, we've already purchased the pump. Now let's remove the broken one and replace it with a working one. To do this, we need to remove the washing machine's drain assembly. Then, unclip the drain pump from this assembly. Then, carefully remove the wires from it. Then, we take out the working drain pump and install it in the old one's place. We attach the wires and other accessories to it. And then we reassemble the machine.
To make the entire process easier, we've put together a video that shows the entire process of removing and replacing the drain pump. Watch it:
Assembling a washing machine
When reassembling, pay attention to the mounting points. Check the clamps for proper installation and tightness, tighten all screws, and ensure all parts are in place.
After this, we will check the machine’s functionality by performing a test wash. Be careful during the washing process. If a leak occurs, it means a connection was not properly secured. Correct this issue and test the washing machine again.
We hope this article helped you solve your problem. Have a nice day!

Good afternoon! Could you please tell me if the impeller blade is broken, does the pump need to be replaced?
Of course it is. A pump like that won't last long.
Remove the broken blade and continue using it, as long as it's draining water. I have eight such blades. There's no talk of imbalance; the RPMs are very low.
This is not necessary; you can break off the blade on the opposite side, which will restore balance, although the pump's performance will decrease.
Everything works for me, I followed the instructions!! Then I took out the pump and applied 220 volts to it and it works!!! What else could be the problem!!! Maybe 220 volts isn't getting to the pump?
Finally, someone asked the right question. Everyone says "the pump isn't working"—replace it. But what if it works, but not always? The problem is, no one mentions the age of the washing machine, and the older it is, the more likely it is to fail. I'll tell you this: if your machine starts to periodically generate various errors, or something isn't working, or doesn't always work, there's only one cause: the "control module." More specifically, its power section. With age, microcracks appear in the soldering, which ultimately lead to malfunctions in some devices. And even the burning of circuit boards, or rather, traces on the board. There's plenty about this on the internet, too; just do your research.
Exactly! My pump is perfect, like new, and it spins perfectly on 220 volts—I checked it, but it doesn't turn on to drain—I'll have to check the electronics... For some reason, everyone online blames the pump—even a fool can see that. I almost foolishly bought a new one, but I carefully removed the old one and checked it.
Could there be soot and carbon on the control board?
Hello everyone! Could you please help? My washing machine isn't draining. I changed the drain pump, but it's still the same. It's a Samsung S621. Thanks in advance!
The impeller rotates with difficulty, and not in jerks. Is it possible to remove the impeller? The electric motor is apparently non-separable. When turned on straight, it rotates, but each revolution is not full.
Could you tell me if the drain pump motor is disassembled? Samsung wf 75205AV. The armature rotates, but it's stiff, while it should be free (with slight jerks). Is it possible to remove the impeller? I tried prying it off with a screwdriver, but it didn't work. I plugged it in directly, it works, but it seems like the RPMs are low. Can anyone help?
Good afternoon! My washing machine isn't draining! I replaced the drain pump, but it still won't drain! What else could it be?
Thanks for the tips! We pulled out a chain with a cross, a bra underwire, and some other metal bits from the hose in front of the pump. The pump didn't burn out, and the machine works.
I also climbed into the pipe and found a sock.
Good afternoon. The problem is that the pump impeller is working, but the pump itself isn't drawing in any water.
Try calling a repairman to your home and let him take a look. How long has it been acting up?
The impeller works but does not drain.
I just finished a repair. The problem was that a rag had gotten into the drain pipe before the pump, blocking the free flow of water. As a result, the pump hummed and the impeller spun, but to no avail.
Thanks a lot!
I thought I was done for!
Your first piece of advice helped right away. Thank you so much!
Good evening! The machine isn't draining. I opened the filter and found a cutting tool stuck in one of the blades. Part of it broke off. The machine started humming during the spin cycle and then went silent. Then, during the spin cycle, there was a quiet hum, and it was silent before it started spinning. What should I do now?
Thank you so much for the recommendations! The machine stopped leaking. I cleaned the filter as you recommended, and it's working again. Hooray!
Hello. The machine washed, but didn't spin or drain, and the display showed SE. I cleaned the filter, and the threads were still wound around it. Now, when I wash, the display shows SE. What could this be and what should I do?
Ha! Now the drum won't even turn. It's probably the end for her.
Hello, I have this situation: At some point (I believe it's before the spin cycle), the machine is trying to drain as much water as possible. You can hear it spinning, but there's no noticeable effect. It's taking too long. I've taken everything apart. The filter is clean, the pipes aren't clogged... but while it's spinning, if you lift the drain hose a little (about halfway up), you can hear water start draining rapidly... and the problem is gone. What could it be?
Same error atlant
Good evening. My Atlant SMA 50U102 washer keeps throwing an F4 error. I've cleaned the filter, all the hoses, the pump, and everything else that could be cleaned. The pump works perfectly, the blades are intact, but after 20 minutes of operation, it still throws an F4 error. What else could it be?
We have the same problem. My husband and I spent until one in the morning working on it. It just doesn't work. You turn on the drain, it seems to catch right away, and then it's silent. And the motor gets really hot.
Good evening, I have a Samsung washing machine, it's been running for two months now. It won't spin, and the drain pipe is full of water, so it won't drain. The machine gets stuck at the 9-minute mark. It tries to rev up and then stops. It doesn't display any error messages. What's the problem?
Hello! I have a Samsung wf862 washing machine and it won't drain. It gets to the ninth minute and then just stops. What should I do? Please help! It also won't spin at all.
Good evening. The machine isn't draining. The pump is working. The drain hose isn't clogged. What could be wrong?
Good evening! The washing machine drains water but doesn't spin. What could be wrong?
Good evening. I have an INDESIT PWDE 7125 S (EU) washing machine. The drain doesn't work (2-minute drain cycle). When I press the drain button, the pump turns on for 2 seconds (a sound comes from the drain hose) and then turns off. After 2 minutes, error F13 appears (drying temperature sensor malfunction - YES). The filter and hose are clean (from the drum to the sink). The winding is in good condition (220 Ohm). I can drain the water by gravity. What's the cause?
your heating element is not working or is broken into the housing
I changed the pump on my Samsung wf125nc... it still doesn't work... I got to the M2LZ47 thyristor and changed it... it still doesn't work... I turned on the drain program, checked the terminals on the pump with a tester, there is current, but there is still no drain (oh yeah, the door lock is also sticking, but when I press hard, it works and the machine starts washing again). Tell me what else could be wrong!
The door lock requires repair
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Thanks to your advice, I solved the problem!
Hello. My toilet isn't draining. I replaced the pump and cleaned everything, but the problem persists. What could be wrong?
We changed the pump, checked it when it was empty, but it was still draining. Just started washing, but it wasn't draining at all! What should I do?
Good afternoon...all the questions, but where can I read the answers?
Help! My Ariston washing machine drains poorly during the spin cycle! I have to open the door, close it, and then restart the program until it drains the remaining water! Then I set it to spin and the laundry is dry! I've been having trouble since I bought it!
We have the same thing(((( Did you solve the problem?
Please help! My Vestel machine isn't draining, but it drains during the quick wash cycle, and the filter is clean. What should I do?
Thank you. The diagnostics were done as planned. Saved on a mechanic.
I turned it over as in the video, found the sock in the accordion, everything works.
Good evening, could you please tell me what could be the problem with my washing machine not draining? We've checked and cleaned everything, but there's nothing wrong. When I turn the machine on, the initial drain goes fine, but then it shows F4. I place a bowl on the drain hose, and the water drains.
My car also shows F4, what did you do?
Hello. The machine won't drain, we checked everything and everything is clean, but when I blow into the drain hose, everything drains. What could this be?
I have the same thing. Did you fix it or is the problem still there?
Good afternoon! The cord is stuck behind the handle on my LG washing machine, and I can't get it out with tweezers. Question: How else can I get it out?
Good morning! My BOSCH washing machine takes 2 hours to wash instead of 40 minutes, and it doesn't drain. The pump was replaced yesterday. A technician replaced it. Today, the same problem: it takes 2 hours to wash... I set the program, and it drains, then does the rinse program, drains, and spins. Why doesn't it do this on other programs?
Change the heating element.
Hello! My washing machine only washes cotton and synthetics on the cotton program; it doesn't rinse, drain, or spin. It does everything on the rinse program. What's wrong?
Good morning, my washing machine isn't draining, but it's still washing and rinsing. What could be the cause?
After cleaning the filter and checking the pump, I ran the rinse cycle to check the drainage. There was no drainage, error code E16. What's the cause?
People, there's no water drain, the pump is working, the pressure switch is working, the hoses and filter are clean!!! Is the machine really screwed? Is there some super expensive board?
Guys, thank you very much.
Your advice helped, I'm a hero in front of my wife!))
Hello. Has anyone else had a similar problem? The machine doesn't drain during the wash and rinse cycles, and when the drum is full, it squeaks as it spins. I had to drain the water through a filter.
Today the machine didn't drain, thanks to your advice I got the debris out of the filter and it started working )))) Thank you!
Thanks for the advice. A very clear explanation of troubleshooting! I was looking for the problem—the water wasn't draining. I've had this happen before. I'd clean the filter or find small solid debris in the impeller, but this time it wouldn't drain, even with a clean filter and a working impeller. And only from you did I find the advice to clean the pump. I'm shocked—two keys, a bra underwire, a few coins, and all that with a handful of dog hair. And you can tell by the oxidation and rust—the machine has been draining for so long!
Hello! I see questions, but no answers. The machine isn't draining, the filter is clean, the hose is clean, the pump rotates during the spin cycle, but the water still won't drain. What should I do?
Please advise, my MASTERCOOK PTE-1036P machine isn't draining. It goes through the wash cycle and then stops. We've cleaned the filter.
MASTERCOOK PTE-1036P washing machine. The wash cycle is fine, but then the water doesn't drain. We tried cleaning the filter, but it didn't help. What should I do?
Could you please tell me why my DAEWOO DWD-M8051 washing machine doesn't drain through the drain hose, but only through the filter? After I remove the water through the filter, the spin cycle starts. Has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks for the article, it was really helpful, I managed without my husband's help or calling a professional!
My Indesit washing machine isn't draining, it's not rinsing, and the water is leaking out the bottom. I removed the drain pump and everything is fine, but when I turn on the spin cycle, it makes a loud noise. What kind of malfunction is this?
Tell me, my Samsung drains well after washing, but during spinning it drains intermittently and the program crashes.
I followed the troubleshooting process step by step, finding a serpentine belt and a small screw between the tank and the pump. I reassembled everything, and miraculously, it worked. Thank you so much for the helpful advice!
The author of this article saved me about $120 (the minimum price for a washing machine), and I almost bought a new one. I read the article and fixed a broken one (the cord got stuck in the pump). Thank you!
Hello, my washing machine stops at 19 and doesn't spin. I can hear it humming, but it doesn't wash or drain. What could be wrong?
Hello! My Hansa machine didn't drain after a wash cycle, it froze, and the "run" light is flashing! All the hoses are clean, the pump is working, I checked and cleaned it myself! It used to freeze, but restarting it helped, but now it's frozen completely, and unplugging doesn't help! How can I reset the error?
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for the advice, I'm a real man-woman 🙂
Hello! My GORENIE isn't draining. The filter and hoses are clean, and the pump is working. I unscrew the filter, but no water reaches the pump, although I can see it in the drum. What if I remove the eco-ball? Please help. It's too far to take it for repairs.
I'm grateful to you all, your advice has already helped me twice. Thank you so much again!
Hello! My Bosch Maxx (WFO 2040 0E) is behaving strangely at times (there's no clear pattern). After rinsing, the machine doesn't spin; it simply turns off after a while. There's no sound of the pump during this time. Sometimes you just have to wait 15-20 minutes, then manually start the spin, and it starts. This completes the wash cycle. But sometimes this doesn't help, and I have to manually drain all the water through the thin drain hose, then unscrew the cap (supposedly a filter) at the bottom. There's nothing there. I look at the impeller; there's nothing suspicious there either; the impeller rotates manually at a specific rate. I replace the cap. I turn on the spin cycle, and the machine starts spinning, although the pump is, of course, audible. The hose from the drum to the pump is clean. I don't know what's wrong. I can't find any pattern for the spin failure, as sometimes the wash cycle goes smoothly. Please tell me where to look for a solution.
Hello! We have a problem with our Atlant washing machine; it won't drain and displays an F4 error. We've checked everything, everything is clean, and even replaced the pump. But the problem still persists... Can you tell me what to do? Is it possible to repair it or should I buy a new one?
Thank you so much for the detailed explanation. I managed to get by without calling a specialist.
Hello! My Indesit washing machine isn't draining. The hose is connected to the tub. If I missed it and didn't put it in the cup, all the lights start flashing. Then we turn on the spin and rinse cycles separately. The pump is clean.
Mine didn't drain because ten kopecks got into the hose and there was trash on it!
Thank you so much for the article! The repair took me 20 minutes (which means I'm not that lost). The car wouldn't drain. I removed the filter, and it was completely foggy. Besides rags, there was money, glass, and popsicle sticks in there. I'm absolutely shocked!
The Candy machine isn't draining. The filter is clean.
Is it possible to connect 220V directly to the pump for testing?
Yes, it's possible. That's what I'm checking.
Thanks, it helped!
Hello, I have the following problem: my Ariston washing machine washes, but when it reaches the spin cycle and drains, it stops. I installed a new pump, but the problem persists. It won't turn on. I've cleaned everything.
Hello, I have the following problem: my Indesit IWC6085 washing machine does not drain during the rinse cycle.
Hello, I can't figure out what the problem is. The machine goes all the way to the spin cycle and drains. Error code E003. The filter is clean. The pump is also clean. The pipes are not clogged. If I place the drain hose on the floor, the water drains by gravity. But it doesn't drain into the sink. What could be the problem? Thanks in advance.
Hello, my washing machine is still filling with water after a wash cycle, even though it's turned off. Please help me with this.
We had this happen. The house ended up flooded all the way down to the first floor. The water supply valve needed replacing. It wasn't closing all the way. Now I turn off the water to the washing machine after washing, just in case.
Thank you so much for the article! I thought I'd spend a ton of money on a professional, but thanks to you, I got off with a minor scare 🙂
Good evening. We replaced the drain pump. The washing machine drained completely for one day, but on the second day it started draining incompletely. We cleaned all the filters, but the problem persists. Please help me find the cause.
Could you please tell me why my washing machine takes so long to fill with water and doesn't drain? What's the reason? Even when I drop the drain hose on the floor, the water drains. Thanks in advance.
Thank you! Your article continues to help people!
The machine was humming loudly, but it wasn't draining. I looked in the filter and found a sock.
Thank you, author!
I put the hose in, but no water flows. What's the reason?
Hello, our Indesit washing machine isn't draining. What should I do and how can I fix it?
Read the article first.
Thank you! Your advice really helped me out by disassembling the pump. And there was a kopeck in there. It blocked the water outlet.
🙂
Hi everyone, my washing machine won't drain unless I lift the drain hose higher than it, meaning into the sink.
Good evening. We replaced the drain pump. The washing machine drained completely for one day, but on the second day it started draining incompletely. We cleaned all the filters, but the problem persists. Please help me find the cause.
Thank you for your consultation.
Thank you for the article.
I had the following situation. The pump was working, I checked it using the method described in the article.
The hose above the pump was clean, but I unscrewed the float chamber above the hose and pulled the sock through the hole. Everything's fine now.
Hello! My LG washing machine washed normally twice, then stopped after 11 minutes and said "OE." We cleaned the drain and the pump. The pump is clean, but the water won't drain! What should I do? Could it be a problem with the electronics?
Electrolux washing machine. 13 years old. It indicates a blockage and won't drain. I've double-checked everything from the drum to the central drain pipe. Everything is clean and working. Of the three drain programs, it doesn't drain water twice, and may drain once, or vice versa.
Hello, I pulled the sock out of the pump. Now it won't fill. The machine is new, only a month old.
Have you checked the drain motor? It works, and there's no debris. We're putting it back together, but it still doesn't work. Could there be a wiring issue?
Good day. I have a Samsung WF6458N7W. During the cycle, at the end of the wash cycle, the drain and spin cycles don't start. The display shows the current cycle time, not an error. What's wrong? Could the water level sensor be malfunctioning?
My Zanussi started acting up, so I ran a diagnostic—error E21. I cleaned the filter, checked the pump, and found two socks and a lollipop stick in the corrugated tube between the drum and the pump. It's working again. Thank you.
