The washing machine does not drain water, how to fix it?

The washing machine does not drain water.Have you decided to do your laundry and noticed that your washing machine isn't draining? Unfortunately, this is one of the most common problems. It can occur for various reasons.

But before we discuss the causes, let's look at how this problem manifests itself and what types it can occur in:

  • Water drainage occurs extremely slowly, and a program failure may occur at the same time.
  • During the program's execution, the process stalls at the point where the water should drain. The water doesn't drain.
  • Some washes drain water, others do not.
  • During the main wash everything is fine, but during the rinse there is no drainage.
  • The spin mode is locked after draining.

What could be the causes of this problem? Let's list them:

  1. The connecting pipe (between the tank and the pump) is clogged with debris.
  2. There was a foreign object in the pump.
  3. The pump filter is clogged with debris.
  4. The pump broke.
  5. Clogged drain or trap.
  6. The hose through which water is drained is clogged.

How to fix a washing machine yourself?

Before repairing your washing machine, you must disconnect it from the power source. Don't neglect safety precautions. First, unplug the machine from the power source.

Cleaning the filter

How to remove and replace a washing machine filter

Next, let's check the filter. It's located at the bottom of the housing, on the front side. Some water may spill onto the floor during operation, so it's best to have a rag or small empty container ready. If you notice the filter is clogged, simply clean it of any foreign matter. This may solve the problem.

For clarity, we'll demonstrate the entire process of removing a washing machine filter on video:

We check the pipe

Check the washing machine hose

But what if the filter is removed and the problem persists? That is, the washing machine isn't draining? In this case, we move on to the next step of the repair. Specifically, cleaning the hose connecting the washing machine's tub to the pump.

To access it, you need to unscrew the bolts that secure the drain assembly. After that, remove the hose and the retaining clamp. Then, drain the water from the hose into a prepared container.

After this, you need to check to see if the pipe is clogged with any debris. To do this, gently squeeze it in different places. If you feel a blockage, remove it. After this, reassemble the entire assembly.

Impeller

Washing machine pump impellerIf this doesn't solve the problem, then we'll move on to the next possible malfunction. Now we'll check to see if the pump impeller is jammed. It's located directly behind the filter. If even a small object gets caught in it, it could cause a malfunction. So, first, try spinning the impeller. If it spins and no foreign objects are visible, then it's fine. If you find something obscured, like a coin or a button, remove it. If this doesn't help, then the drain pump (pump) remains to be checked.

How to check and replace the pump?

Replacing the pump yourselfTo check the drain pump, remove the filter, as you did earlier. Then set the spin cycle. Illuminate the filter opening. A regular flashlight is the easiest way to do this. If the pump impeller does not move, it means that the pump (drain pump) is broken. After all, we've already checked it for foreign objects. And that's the only explanation for why the impeller isn't rotating. Now that we've identified the problem, we move on to the next step—replacing the broken part.

But before that, we need to purchase this very part. Most washing machines use standard parts, so we can easily find the new pump we need. If you don't know where to buy one, the easiest way is to search online. Just type "buy washing machine pump." Then find the sellers in the search results, call them, and buy a new pump.

So, we've already purchased the pump. Now let's remove the broken one and replace it with a working one. To do this, we need to remove the washing machine's drain assembly. Then, unclip the drain pump from this assembly. Then, carefully remove the wires from it. Then, we take out the working drain pump and install it in the old one's place. We attach the wires and other accessories to it. And then we reassemble the machine.

To make the entire process easier, we've put together a video that shows the entire process of removing and replacing the drain pump. Watch it:

Assembling a washing machine

When reassembling, pay attention to the mounting points. Check the clamps for proper installation and tightness, tighten all screws, and ensure all parts are in place.

After this, we will check the machine’s functionality by performing a test wash. Be careful during the washing process. If a leak occurs, it means a connection was not properly secured. Correct this issue and test the washing machine again.

We hope this article helped you solve your problem. Have a nice day!

Good afternoon! Could you please tell me if the impeller blade is broken, does the pump need to be replaced?

    • Gravatar Vitaly Vitaly:

Of course it is. A pump like that won't last long.

    • Gravatar Boris Boris:

Remove the broken blade and continue using it, as long as it's draining water. I have eight such blades. There's no talk of imbalance; the RPMs are very low.

    • Gravatar Andrey Andrey:

This is not necessary; you can break off the blade on the opposite side, which will restore balance, although the pump's performance will decrease.

  2. Gravatar Nurik Nurik:

Everything works for me, I followed the instructions!! Then I took out the pump and applied 220 volts to it and it works!!! What else could be the problem!!! Maybe 220 volts isn't getting to the pump?

    • Gravatar Oregon Oregon:

Finally, someone asked the right question. Everyone says "the pump isn't working"—replace it. But what if it works, but not always? The problem is, no one mentions the age of the washing machine, and the older it is, the more likely it is to fail. I'll tell you this: if your machine starts to periodically generate various errors, or something isn't working, or doesn't always work, there's only one cause: the "control module." More specifically, its power section. With age, microcracks appear in the soldering, which ultimately lead to malfunctions in some devices. And even the burning of circuit boards, or rather, traces on the board. There's plenty about this on the internet, too; just do your research.

      • Gravatar BOB BOB:

Exactly! My pump is perfect, like new, and it spins perfectly on 220 volts—I checked it, but it doesn't turn on to drain—I'll have to check the electronics... For some reason, everyone online blames the pump—even a fool can see that. I almost foolishly bought a new one, but I carefully removed the old one and checked it.

        • Gravatar Vik Vik:

Could there be soot and carbon on the control board?

  3. Gravatar Kolya Kolya:

Hello everyone! Could you please help? My washing machine isn't draining. I changed the drain pump, but it's still the same. It's a Samsung S621. Thanks in advance!

  4. Gravatar Grisha Grisha:

The impeller rotates with difficulty, and not in jerks. Is it possible to remove the impeller? The electric motor is apparently non-separable. When turned on straight, it rotates, but each revolution is not full.

  5. Gravatar lol lolya:

Could you tell me if the drain pump motor is disassembled? Samsung wf 75205AV. The armature rotates, but it's stiff, while it should be free (with slight jerks). Is it possible to remove the impeller? I tried prying it off with a screwdriver, but it didn't work. I plugged it in directly, it works, but it seems like the RPMs are low. Can anyone help?

  6. Gravatar Roman Novel:

Good afternoon! My washing machine isn't draining! I replaced the drain pump, but it still won't drain! What else could it be?

  7. Gravatar Alexander Alexander:

Thanks for the tips! We pulled out a chain with a cross, a bra underwire, and some other metal bits from the hose in front of the pump. The pump didn't burn out, and the machine works.

    • Gravatar Ilya Ilya:

I also climbed into the pipe and found a sock.

  8. Gravatar Rinat Rinat:

Good afternoon. The problem is that the pump impeller is working, but the pump itself isn't drawing in any water.

    • Gravatar Vlad Vlad:

Try calling a repairman to your home and let him take a look. How long has it been acting up?

    • Gravatar Alekber Alekber:

The impeller works but does not drain.

      • Gravatar Max Max:

I just finished a repair. The problem was that a rag had gotten into the drain pipe before the pump, blocking the free flow of water. As a result, the pump hummed and the impeller spun, but to no avail.

  9. Gravatar Alexey Alexey:

    Thanks a lot!
I thought I was done for!
Your first piece of advice helped right away. Thank you so much!

  10. Gravatar Anna Anna:

Good evening! The machine isn't draining. I opened the filter and found a cutting tool stuck in one of the blades. Part of it broke off. The machine started humming during the spin cycle and then went silent. Then, during the spin cycle, there was a quiet hum, and it was silent before it started spinning. What should I do now?

  11. Jamil's Gravatar Jamila:

Thank you so much for the recommendations! The machine stopped leaking. I cleaned the filter as you recommended, and it's working again. Hooray!

  12. Gravatar Olga Olga:

Hello. The machine washed, but didn't spin or drain, and the display showed SE. I cleaned the filter, and the threads were still wound around it. Now, when I wash, the display shows SE. What could this be and what should I do?

  13. Gravatar Olga Olga:

Ha! Now the drum won't even turn. It's probably the end for her.

  14. Gravatar Vadim Vadim:

Hello, I have this situation: At some point (I believe it's before the spin cycle), the machine is trying to drain as much water as possible. You can hear it spinning, but there's no noticeable effect. It's taking too long. I've taken everything apart. The filter is clean, the pipes aren't clogged... but while it's spinning, if you lift the drain hose a little (about halfway up), you can hear water start draining rapidly... and the problem is gone. What could it be?

  15. Sergey Gravatar Sergey:

    Same error atlant

  16. Gravatar Anton Anton:

Good evening. My Atlant SMA 50U102 washer keeps throwing an F4 error. I've cleaned the filter, all the hoses, the pump, and everything else that could be cleaned. The pump works perfectly, the blades are intact, but after 20 minutes of operation, it still throws an F4 error. What else could it be?

    • Gravatar Zoya Zoya:

We have the same problem. My husband and I spent until one in the morning working on it. It just doesn't work. You turn on the drain, it seems to catch right away, and then it's silent. And the motor gets really hot.

Good evening. I have an INDESIT PWDE 7125 S (EU) washing machine. The drain doesn't work (2-minute drain cycle). When I press the drain button, the pump turns on for 2 seconds (a sound comes from the drain hose) and then turns off. After 2 minutes, error F13 appears (drying temperature sensor malfunction - YES). The filter and hose are clean (from the drum to the sink). The winding is in good condition (220 Ohm). I can drain the water by gravity. What's the cause?

Today the machine didn't drain, thanks to your advice I got the debris out of the filter and it started working )))) Thank you!

  40. Gravatar Nata Nata:

Thanks for the advice. A very clear explanation of troubleshooting! I was looking for the problem—the water wasn't draining. I've had this happen before. I'd clean the filter or find small solid debris in the impeller, but this time it wouldn't drain, even with a clean filter and a working impeller. And only from you did I find the advice to clean the pump. I'm shocked—two keys, a bra underwire, a few coins, and all that with a handful of dog hair. And you can tell by the oxidation and rust—the machine has been draining for so long!

  56. Gravatar Yuri Yuri:

Hello! My Bosch Maxx (WFO 2040 0E) is behaving strangely at times (there's no clear pattern). After rinsing, the machine doesn't spin; it simply turns off after a while. There's no sound of the pump during this time. Sometimes you just have to wait 15-20 minutes, then manually start the spin, and it starts. This completes the wash cycle. But sometimes this doesn't help, and I have to manually drain all the water through the thin drain hose, then unscrew the cap (supposedly a filter) at the bottom. There's nothing there. I look at the impeller; there's nothing suspicious there either; the impeller rotates manually at a specific rate. I replace the cap. I turn on the spin cycle, and the machine starts spinning, although the pump is, of course, audible. The hose from the drum to the pump is clean. I don't know what's wrong. I can't find any pattern for the spin failure, as sometimes the wash cycle goes smoothly. Please tell me where to look for a solution.

  81. Gravatar Igor Igor:

Electrolux washing machine. 13 years old. It indicates a blockage and won't drain. I've double-checked everything from the drum to the central drain pipe. Everything is clean and working. Of the three drain programs, it doesn't drain water twice, and may drain once, or vice versa.

Good day. I have a Samsung WF6458N7W. During the cycle, at the end of the wash cycle, the drain and spin cycles don't start. The display shows the current cycle time, not an error. What's wrong? Could the water level sensor be malfunctioning?

  85. Gravatar Den Day:

My Zanussi started acting up, so I ran a diagnostic—error E21. I cleaned the filter, checked the pump, and found two socks and a lollipop stick in the corrugated tube between the drum and the pump. It's working again. Thank you.
