How to wash quilted boots in a washing machine
Caring for and washing shoes, especially winter ones, raises a lot of questions. People often wonder whether they should machine wash these shoes to make their work easier, and whether anything could happen to them. There are quite a few winter shoes, but in this article, we'll focus on whether winter boots can be machine washed.
A few words about shoes
Dutiki, also known as "dutyshi," are waterproof, puffy footwear for fall and winter. A distinctive feature of dutiki is that they are made from high-tech textile materials rather than leather or suede. The most common dutiki are those with a membrane exterior and a fur interior. These ankle boots are comfortable because they have a flat, non-slip sole and a wide shaft.
FYI! You might come across a name for dutik boots called "moonbuts," which translates from English as moon rovers.
The material and quality of the workmanship of these boots will determine how to care for them. Of course, most manufacturers indicate on the label that their boots are not machine washable. But some aren't deterred, and after experimenting with their boots, they claim nothing will happen. However, don't be so sure; boots of dubious quality can fall apart, or the soles can even come off, so everything will depend on the overall quality of the product.
Basic rules for washing
Now let's figure out how to wash quilted boots in a washing machine, if you've decided to do so. The rules are quite simple:
- clean the soles of shoes if necessary;

- we put the dutik boots into a shoe washing bag and then into the washing machine drum;
- pour in a small amount of liquid detergent for delicate clothes, as it rinses out best; if the quilted boots are made of membrane, use a special detergent for membrane fabrics;
- Next, select a washing mode with water heating no more than 40 degrees, for example, “Shoes”, “Hand wash";
- turn off the spin cycle and do not use the drying mode;
- We start the wash.
Some housewives note that removing dirt from shoes at low temperatures in a washing machine isn't always possible, requiring additional scrubbing. Therefore, they prefer hand washing to machine washing, as the results are better.
This type of washing isn't suitable for all boots of this type. For example, if the lining is made of genuine sheepskin, machine washing can be damaging. What should you do if your boots can't be machine washed? You can use a brush and mild soap solution. Scrub the surface of the boots and gently rinse away the foam. This cleaning will protect the soles of the boots.
Drying shoes
Washed? All that's left is to dry them properly. You can place your moon boots near a radiator or heater, first absorbing excess moisture with terry towels or newspapers. This method won't harm fabric boots, but it's not recommended for membrane boots. The membrane is “afraid” of high temperatures, which leads to the loss of its water-repellent function.
After washing your down jackets, you can treat them with a special water-repellent treatment if needed. Instructions for use are included on the packaging, making this easy.
