How to wash a Gorka suit in a washing machine

How to wash a Gorka suit in a washing machineThe Gorka suit was widely used by military personnel during the Soviet era, but today it has become widely known among other groups as well. The clothing's thermal insulation properties are particularly prized, but everyone knows that this fabric requires special care. Can the Gorka suit be machine washed, and how should it be done correctly to avoid damaging the garment?

First, the item needs to be prepared.

It's impossible to say that all Gorka suits are identical. Each manufacturer adds its own unique features, so it's impossible to give a definitive answer regarding washing. Some recommend against washing Gorka suits in a washing machine altogether, while others insist that washing them is unavoidable, so it's best to do it in a washing machine. So who's right?

First, it's worth checking the product tag, if you still have one. The manufacturer likely provided everything the user needs to know: whether the Gorka can withstand washing and, if so, what are the best washing and drying parameters (temperature or spin cycle settings, for example).

Important! If the manufacturer allows machine washing, be sure to close all flaps and zippers beforehand. Also, make sure there are no foreign objects in the pockets.

Remember that proper care of your suit will help it maintain its best qualities for a long time – thermal insulation, windproofness, water resistance, and, most importantly, comfort to wear.

Automatic cleaning

set the washing temperatureSo, first of all, don't use dry powders or other fancy detergents when washing. It's better to stick to liquid or capsule-based detergents. The slide is washed only on a delicate cycle and at a low temperature (around 40 degrees, no more), and these parameters do not differ from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Regarding spinning, some manufacturers warn against washing the suit with a spin cycle, while others allow this procedure, but at minimum speed to avoid creasing.

The use of a waterproofing spray is a controversial issue. While it might work during washing, it will make the suit unusable in the summer.

Manual cleaning

Visitors to various forums agree that hand washing is much safer than machine washing (even on a delicate cycle). Therefore, it's a better choice. Of course, hand washing a Gorka requires special care, but at least you can monitor the process.

  • Use water no hotter than 30 degrees for washing.
  • As a detergent, use either liquid laundry detergent or, preferably, laundry or baby soap.
  • Do not add bleaches, stain removers or other special products under any circumstances.
  • If there is heavy dirt, use a medium-hard brush.

First, turn both the pants and the anorak inside out and soak them in warm water for 3 to 4 hours. It's best to use baby soap, and only use detergent for serious, stubborn stains. After the allotted time, gently agitate the suit, but do not rub or press too hard. Then rinse a couple of times and gently squeeze. If you are preparing your Gorka for the new season, you can treat it with a special shampoo to preserve the fabric's properties.

How are we going to dry it?

Select a well-ventilated and warm room for drying the suit. However, avoid exposing the suit to direct sunlight or artificial heat sources.

Important! It's crucial that the Gorka suit be allowed to dry naturally from start to finish; otherwise, the suit's waterproofing and thermal insulation properties will not be restored.

drying the Gorka suit

Immediately after washing, hang the garment vertically to allow excess moisture to drain and smooth out any wrinkles. If this is not possible, you can iron the garment on setting 2 and steam it through the fabric.

Restoration after washing

Once the suit is completely dry, be sure to treat it with a special treatment to fully restore its unique properties. Polyurethane impregnations from DuPont or NikWax are excellent for this purpose. To ensure your Gorka suit lasts as long as possible, follow these care instructions.

  • Remove dust, dirt and other dry stains immediately, without allowing them to become embedded in the fabric.
  • Monitor the condition of the item's fittings.
  • Purchase a special case in which to store the suit during breaks in use.

Manufacturers also recommend folding the Gorka in a specific manner to avoid creases or other unpleasant consequences of improper storage. Several guides on this topic are available online.
