How to wash a hollow fiber blanket in a washing machine

washing a blanketBedding items like blankets and pillows, like other items, require washing. And we're not talking about duvet covers and pillowcases; in this case, we're talking about duvets filled with hollow fiber. We've prepared instructions to find out whether they can be washed and how to do it properly.

Machine capabilities

Hollowfiber is a synthetic material (polyester) with a porous, non-woven structure. Due to its eco-friendliness, elasticity, wear resistance, and breathability, it is used to make blankets, pillows, jackets, and children's toys.

If you don't follow the care instructions for a holofiber blanket, you'll have to wash it. Manufacturers do not recommend washing blankets with this filling in the washing machine. Despite this, housewives, having carried out a series of experiments, claim that it is possible to wash the blanket.

Before doing this, however, make sure your washing machine can handle this process. First, the blanket must fit easily into the drum, so the machine should have a minimum load capacity of 6 kg, preferably more. Second, it's best to have a special program, such as "Blanket," "Down," "Bulky Items," or "Delicates."

Instructions

washing a blanket in a washing machineTo wash a holofiber blanket in a washing machine, you need to:

  • place the blanket in the drum, having first checked it for integrity; if there are holes, they need to be sewn up;
  • pour liquid laundry detergent into the powder compartment;
  • select one of the special washing modes, for example, “delicate”;
  • set the washing temperature to no higher than 300WITH;
  • start the wash.

You can leave the spin cycle on; the hollowfiber regains its shape well. However, it's best not to use the drying cycle.

If the blanket is too large and does not fit in the drum, you will have to resort to hand washing. To do this, fill the bathtub with water and dissolve laundry detergent in it. Then, immerse the rolled-up blanket in the water for 10 minutes, then gradually unroll it and roll it into a new tube. After repeating this process a couple of times, rinse the blanket several times, gently squeeze it by hand, and let the water drain. Washing is done in the same way. bamboo blanket.

Drying Features

Unlike down, drying hollowfiber blankets is much easier. Hollowfiber blankets can be dried either on a line or in a drying rack. If hand-washed, you can first hang them on a line to drain, then straighten them out and lay them out to dry.

Dry the blanket in sunny weather, fluffing the filling with your hands as it dries. This will help the hollowfiber take its proper shape and prevent it from clumping. Even with prolonged drying, the filler will not “suffocate” since the fibers of the material do not absorb water.

Please note! Hollow fiber does not harbor microorganisms or mites, as it is an unfavorable environment for them. Therefore, this material is considered hypoallergenic.

Caring for blankets

Machine washing a holofiber blanket will cut its lifespan in half. Therefore, it's recommended to clean these items. A blanket that's regularly cared for will last at least 10 years in perfect condition. Here are some care recommendations:

  • The blanket must be dried regularly in the sun, this will save you from unnecessary washing, and the product will remain fresh and clean;
  • If the blanket gets dirty, it is better to take it to a dry cleaner, where they will carry out the washing procedure without the risk of damage; the procedure is infrequent, and therefore not expensive;
  • You can wash the blanket if necessary, but you should not bleach or chlorinate it at all;
  • If there is no dirt, it is enough to wash the blanket 1-2 times a year.

Washing other items

washing hollowfiber pillowsSpeaking of blankets, a few words should be said about hollowfiber pillows. Unlike blankets, pillows are not machine washable. After several washes, they will become unusable, or more accurately, lose their shape, making them extremely uncomfortable to sleep on. Pillows can only be washed by hand.

To perform this procedure, fill a basin with water and dissolve laundry detergent (or regular shampoo). Place the pillow in the water and let it sit for 15-20 minutes to allow the soapy solution to penetrate and develop its properties. After this, gently knead the pillow with your hands, squeezing it out to release all the dirt and dust. Rinse thoroughly and lay it flat to dry, fluffing up the filling.

If the pillowcase is very dirty, it's best to machine wash it separately using stain removers or bleach. To do this, you'll need to rip the pillowcase open a bit and remove the hollow fiber filling. After the pillowcase dries, stuff it with hollow fiber filling. This wash will ensure your pillow stays clean and maintains its shape.

Important! Pillows should be washed once every three months. If you're using a pregnancy pillow, you should wash it more often.
