Washing an orthopedic pillow in a washing machine
The quality of your rest depends on the cleanliness of your bedding, especially your pillows. If not properly cared for, they can accumulate skin particles, dust, and dirt, which can cause allergic reactions and respiratory problems. To prevent negative effects on your body, you should wash your orthopedic pillow in a washing machine or by hand. To preserve its beneficial properties and appearance, follow the washing instructions.
Automatic pillow cleaning
Unlike natural pillow fillings, synthetic ones are generally machine washable. If in doubt, check the manufacturer's instructions on the label. Synthetic fibers are typically tumble-dried on a delicate or hand cycle. They should be wrung out only by hand, blotting with a towel. Step-by-step instructions for cleaning an orthopedic pillow in an automatic washing machine.
- Remove the cover – it needs to be washed separately.
- Load the product into the drum.
- Set the delicate or hand wash program.
- Select a temperature setting of up to 40° C.
- Turn off the spin function automatically.

- Add or pour detergent into the detergent compartment. Start the washing program.
- Once the machine has finished working, remove the cushion immediately.
- Leave to dry horizontally in a well-ventilated room.
Important! Use half the amount of washing powder you would for a regular wash. Do not use fabric softener.
What powder should I use?
Microparticles of detergent may remain in the pillow after rinsing, causing an allergic reaction. Therefore, you should either rinse the item thoroughly (by repeating the process) or use liquid or gel detergents. These can be successfully replaced with baby detergents containing liquid soap.
When choosing a suitable washing powder, you should be guided by its characteristics:
- absence of allergenic components that cause diseases;
- complete solubility at low water temperatures.
Instructions for using the pillow
Many people don't realize that they need to know how to use their pillows. The lifespan of an orthopedic pillow can be extended by following these care recommendations:
- maintain the hygiene of covers and pillowcases and wash them regularly;
- do not go to bed with wet hair;
- after sleep, turn over upside down;

- Once a month, air the product on an open balcony or in a draft;
- do not cover the pillow with a blanket or bedspread, do not obstruct its natural ventilation;
- keep the product as far away as possible from heating devices and batteries;
- keep the sleeping area clean and avoid dust accumulation;
- do not allow small family members and animals to jump on the bed with pillows;
- vacuum the sleeping area (mattress, sofa) twice a month;
- It is advisable to have your orthopedic pillow professionally dry cleaned once every six months.
Important! When not in use, store the orthopedic pillow in a ventilated cover, not in a plastic bag. Place the packaged product in a locked cabinet to prevent contamination.
Caring for latex pillows
There are two types of latex used for filling: natural and synthetic. A pillow with this type of filling conforms to the curves of the body, providing excellent support for the neck and head.
Natural latex is produced from the milky sap of the rubber tree—a material characterized by elasticity and pliability. Its lifespan reaches 20 years. Synthetic latex, made from polyurethane foam, is less soft and viscous than natural latex. However, it is more porous (meaning it "breathes" better) and more resilient. Its lifespan is almost identical to that of natural latex.
Caring for latex filler that “remembers” the shape of the body has its own peculiarities:
- Do not wash the material in any way—either machine or by hand. To remove dirt, wipe it with a sponge dampened with a special shampoo or soap solution.
- Do not wring out the latex. Remove water by blotting the filler with towels.
- You cannot dry the material in the sun - under the influence of ultraviolet light, its structure is destroyed and hardens. To speed up the process, you can use a fan.
Latex pillow care involves turning it over, airing it, replacing the pillowcase, and periodically professionally dry cleaning it. Some types of latex filling are hand- and even machine-washable. The manufacturer indicates this with appropriate symbols on the label.
Mistakes of pillow owners
The longevity of an orthopedic pillow depends on proper care. Owners notice that the filling loses its properties after the following actions:
- dried near a heater or battery, in the sun;
- ironed;

- washed with bleach, cleaned with abrasive powder;
- knocked the dust out of the pillow;
- wrung out by hand after washing;
- washed more often than once every three months;
- left outside at temperatures below 40°C.
A quality orthopedic pillow is a must-have for everyone. With proper care, it guarantees restful sleep, energy, and a positive mood!
