Can you wash a camel wool pillow in a washing machine?
The key to a healthy sleep is not only a high-quality pillow but also a clean one. If you buy camel wool bedding, you should consider not only the numerous benefits but also the care challenges. The natural composition requires gentle cleaning. Machine washing camel wool pillows is possible, but with some caveats. We'll explain in more detail what to be wary of and what to avoid.
Features of using an automatic machine
Natural wool items can be machine washed, but only if certain rules are followed. This primarily concerns the washing cycle. Ideally, you should select the "Wool" cycle, which is designed specifically for gentle cleaning of expensive knitted items. If there is no dedicated cycle button, select an acceptable alternative: "Delicates" or "Hand Wash."
The second important factor is the water temperature. If the drum temperature exceeds 30 degrees, the pillow will shrink and lose its natural softness. Don't take any risks; it's better to choose the lowest temperature—30, 20, or 0 degrees.
Wool is washable at 30 degrees!
The spin setting also requires special attention. Camel wool, like other delicate materials, doesn't like rapid spinning or high speeds. The maximum permitted drum rotation speed is 400 rpm, but it's best to minimize the risk and turn it off completely. This will reduce the risk of deformation and shrinkage to a minimum.
The fourth point is choosing a detergent. The right formula will preserve the structure of the material, enhance softness, and quickly remove bacteria from the fibers. The ideal option would be to use gels with lanolin extract, which can improve the properties of camel wool. We say a definite "no" to powders whose granules do not dissolve in cold water and spoil the product.
Traditional care
Manufacturers recommend playing it safe and opting for hand washing instead of machine washing. This eliminates mechanical stress and allows for the most gentle cleaning. The cleaning process is simple.
- Fill a large basin or bathtub with warm water (maximum temperature 30 degrees).
- Dissolve the detergent in water.
- We immerse the pillow in a soap solution.
- Soak the product for 5-5.5 hours.
- Carefully drain the water.
- Pour in a portion of clean water and rinse the pillow.

- We repeat the “drain-rinse” sequence until the water in the container becomes completely clear.
You can't wring out a pillow the standard way—wool can become deformed if pressed hard or twisted. To remove moisture, gently press from the center outward. Then, dry it.
Drying the product
Woolen items are delicate not only when cleaned but also when dried. Improperly dried items can become misshapen, lose their original stiffness, or lose their color. To avoid these "surprises," follow the instructions carefully:
- Place a dry terry towel or blanket on a flat surface;
- carefully lay the pillow on the towel;
- straighten out the folds on the pillow;

- cover with a second dry towel or flannel sheet;
- change the bedding periodically as it gets wet;
- Turn the pillow over regularly to ensure even drying.
To dry, choose a ventilated, shaded area to avoid direct sunlight. There's no need to fluff the filling—after 2-3 hours of natural drying, the product will return to its original shape.
