Washing laces in a washing machine
Many housewives prefer to hand-wash their laces. Firstly, the items are too small, and to load them into the drum, they need to be placed in a special bag first. Secondly, you can't throw in accessories separately; you need to gather up a whole batch, and there's usually no time to wait. Whatever one may say, theoretically, washing laces in the washing machine is acceptable. We'll explain the rules to follow to achieve excellent results.
We organize automatic washing
Shoe and sneaker laces are durable. Therefore, there are no contraindications for washing them in a washing machine. If they are particularly dirty, you can even spin them at the highest setting without worrying about damaging the material.
Shoelaces can be washed with shoes and clothes, but remember to sort items by color to avoid fading.
White laces are very difficult to wash by hand. The small laces are difficult to scrub thoroughly, and they get dirty very quickly. Even the tiniest stains are visible on light-colored laces, so cleaning them requires considerable effort. It's easier to machine wash white laces. To achieve excellent results, it's important to follow a few rules:
- Be sure to soak the laces before loading them into the drum. Fill a basin with warm water, add detergent with bleach, and let the laces soak for half an hour.

- After soaking in soapy water, wring out the laces and place them in a laundry bag. A nylon stocking or an old pillowcase can be used instead of a mesh bag. This protection is necessary to prevent small accessories from falling out of the drum and getting stuck in the drain pipe or debris filter.
- Place the bag of laces in the drum. You can't run a nearly empty machine, so add a few items of matching color and fabric.
- add powder to the tray, and if necessary, stain remover and conditioner;
- Start the washing machine, selecting any suitable cycle. For example, the Quick or Mixed wash program, or "Cotton." If the cycle settings are adjustable, it's best to set the spin speed to no more than 800 rpm and the temperature to between 40°C and 60°C.
When the machine has completed the cycle, remove the “strings”, straighten them out and lay them out for further drying. There are no strict restrictions on machine washing laces, the main thing is to place them in a protective bag and not wash them with clothes that fade.
If you refuse SM
It's much faster to hand-wash your laces. Machine washing takes at least an hour, including pre-soaking. By hand-washing, you can cut the time in half. The process for hand-washing laces is as follows:
- First, clean off any dirt, dried grass, or other debris from the accessories;
- Rinse the items thoroughly under the tap, soaping them;
- Soak the laces for 15-20 minutes in hot water with detergent. When washing light-colored laces, you can add a couple of capfuls of chlorine or oxygen bleach to the basin.
- rub the material thoroughly, paying special attention to dirty areas;
- Rinse the "ribbons" in clean water and hang them to dry.
Removing dark stains from light-colored "strings" by hand can be difficult. And so, homemakers often resort to unconventional methods. You can clean white laces using gasoline, three percent vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, or toothpaste. Let's look at each method in more detail.
- Fill a saucepan with water and add 100 ml of gasoline. Immerse the laces in the solution and place them on the stovetop at medium heat. Let the laces soak for about 15 minutes, then rinse them under the tap.
- Prepare some gasoline, bleach (non-chlorine), and cotton pads. Soak a cotton pad in the gasoline and wipe all dirty areas of the laces. Then, wipe away the dirt with a damp cloth and soak the laces in water with a stain remover. Wait 20-30 minutes, remove, and rinse the laces.
- If your white laces have yellow stains, a 3% vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and laundry detergent solution will do the trick. Mix a spoonful of each ingredient. Apply this mixture to the laces using a stiff sponge. Let it sit for 30-40 minutes. Then, simply rinse the laces with clean water.

- You can clean your laces with whitening toothpaste. Apply the paste to the material and let it sit for 40-45 minutes. Then, thoroughly brush the laces and rinse them in warm water.
Light stains can be removed with regular laundry soap; the tactic is simple: lather the laces and then rinse off the foam.
Special household cleaning products are effective for cleaning white laces. Oxygen and optical brighteners have proven effective. Simply dilute the solution in water, soak the laces, and leave them in the solution for the specified time (indicated on the packaging of each specific product).
What "chemistry" should I use?
Folk remedies are effective, but many housewives find it much more convenient to use specialized modern whitening solutions. These can come in gel, powder, wipe, or aerosol form. It's important to choose high-quality cleaning products that effectively remove stains. Among modern cleaning products, the following have proven themselves to be effective:
- Ace Gel Ultra. A concentrated gel that works similarly to bleach. It contains chlorine, which penetrates the fibers of fabrics, removing stains and leaving them sparkling white. Suitable for both hand and machine washing, it works perfectly in water of any temperature.
- Synergetic with active oxygen particles. This gel bleach is distinguished by its versatility. Suitable for all types of fabrics, it can be poured into a washing machine or used for hand washing. It's also not specific to temperature: the formula works well in both cold and hot water.

- Amway SA. Can be used for washing not only white but also colored laces. It can be used in temperatures ranging from 20°C to 90°C. The higher the water temperature, the better the performance. Thanks to its special formula, the gel is gentle on fabric, preventing wear, fading, and deformation. The only drawback is its relatively high cost.
- Vanish Gold Oxi Action. This powder is inexpensive, but just as effective as more highly advertised alternatives. The manufacturer promises that it will lighten the color of an item by 3-4 shades after just one minute of soaking. It's great for cleaning white laces.
- Faberlic Extra Oxy. A powder mixture with active oxygen quickly combats stains, leaving clothes looking brilliantly white. It works even in cold water and is phosphate-free. It is completely safe for human health, as it contains no critical ingredients. Suitable for washing clothes of allergy sufferers.
It is important to determine the correct dosage of the cleaning agent; to do this, you need to study the information on the packaging.
Laces are incredibly easy to clean, so even harsh household chemicals containing chlorine can be used to clean them. It's difficult to damage such a dense material.
Tips from experienced housewives
While there aren't any strict rules to follow when washing laces, there are still some recommendations worth following. These are some simple tips:
- Don't clean shoe laces. It's important to remove them and wash them separately. This will be much more effective.
- Colored laces, which are prone to fading, should be washed separately from other items. Therefore, if you only need to refresh two or three pairs of laces, it's best to do it by hand.
- It is better to wash dirty accessories immediately than to wait until the dirt dries;
- After washing, laces should be dried before being reinserted into shoes. If you lace your shoes with wet laces, the metal rings may rust and the laces themselves may become deformed.
- When using bleach when hand washing, be sure to wear gloves;
- When washing laces in the washing machine, it's important to use protective bags with a fine mesh weave. Large meshes can cause the laces to fall out and end up in the drain.
- Regular cleaning of accessories will help prevent dirt from being absorbed deep into the fabric fibers;
- the plastic "tips" of the laces can be cleaned with a regular eraser;

- It's recommended to dry accessories in the shade, not on radiators. Improper drying can cause them to lose their shape and stain the material.
- It is better to avoid boiling when washing - the plastic tips on the laces may be damaged.
Washing shoelaces is actually quite easy. They're usually made of a thick, durable material. Therefore, there are no special requirements for water temperature or washing machine cycle. It's important to place them in the drum in a special bag or pillowcase, and be sure to sort them by color. Otherwise, if you cycle white laces through a red T-shirt, you might end up with pink accessories.
