Can I wash a cooler bag in a washing machine?

A cooler bag is indispensable for travelers, fishermen, and hikers. However, over time, the product becomes dirty, as it's designed to transport food. How do you machine wash a cooler bag, and will it be damaged? What rules should you follow to ensure successful results?

Why is the machine contraindicated?

Manufacturers prohibit washing cooler bags in the washing machine. This requirement applies to all types of products designed to maintain temperature, whether they're made of polyethylene, fabric, or foil. Yet, some owners still manage to machine wash them, even though this is strictly prohibited, even on the delicate cycle.

There are different types of thermal bags:

• a regular one, which contains insulating materials, it maintains the temperature for a couple of hours;
• The bag with cooling elements has an impressive layer of insulation and a waterproof base, it can keep you cold for half a day;
• Pluggable: when power is supplied, it works like a regular refrigerator, otherwise it works like a simple cooler.

Caution: Use a washing machine to clean the thermal bag only in extreme cases.

None of the above mentioned types can be washed in the washing machine. There are several reasons for this, the main one being the risk of deformation during washing.

The bottom of the cooler is made of cardboard, which maintains its shape. This will crumble if exposed to water. The insulation, which serves as the cooler's primary function, also reacts negatively to washing. It can twist, rendering the cooler ineffective. Therefore, even after hand washing, do not wring the cooler.

The next important element that affects temperature maintenance is the foil-coated fabric. After washing, this coating will crack, rendering the cooler bag ineffective. The coating on the outer layer of the insulated bag may also be damaged.

Use the machine at your own risk.

Despite the manufacturer's recommendation, some housewives still machine wash their thermal bags. Before taking this risk, however, it's important to evaluate the durability of the materials used. Pay special attention to the cardboard bottom; it must be removed before placing the bag in the washing machine.

Machine wash guide for thermal bags:

1. remove all removable elements;
2. fasten the locks;
3. Place the cooler bag in a designated laundry bag to minimize damage;
4. Pour liquid detergent into the tray;
5. set the program for delicate items or hand wash;
6. Once the process is complete, remove the thermal bag and dry it.

It is advisable to select a mode with a low temperature and minimum spin speed.

It's important to mention the proper way to dry insulated items. Never place them near radiators or in direct sunlight. Drying should take place under natural conditions. It's best to stuff the bag tightly with newspapers to maintain its shape, then place it upside down. Choose a room with natural air circulation (such as a balcony) to dry.

The best way to wash a thermal bag is by hand. It's also less time-consuming and labor-intensive than machine washing. Here's how to properly hand-wash an insulated bag:

1. pour warm water (about 30 C) into a large container;
2. add liquid hand washing detergent (in a proportion of 1 tbsp. per 1 liter of water);
3. place the bag in the resulting solution and leave for about fifteen minutes;
4. wipe particularly dirty areas with a soft-bristled brush or cloth;
5. After washing, the thermal bag must be rinsed and left to dry.

Since the bag is used to store food, it often develops stubborn stains or unpleasant odors. A one-to-one vinegar solution can help remove fruit or juice stains. Simply apply it to the stain and rinse with water after a few minutes.

If your cooler bag has greasy stains, use laundry soap or dishwashing detergent. Wet the material with warm, soapy water and let it sit for about ten minutes. Then, scrub the bag with a soft brush and rinse.

Tea bags can help eliminate unpleasant odors. Place a few in a cooler overnight. In the morning, you'll notice the stench has completely disappeared.
