Can I install a dryer in a walk-in closet?

In a small living space, it's difficult to fit even a washing machine, let alone a dryer. If such an appliance is truly necessary, it has to be placed wherever space is available. Many people wonder whether it's possible to place a dryer in a walk-in closet; will using it in such a space cause damage?

Is this type of placement of the dryer acceptable?

Modern dryers are easy to install. Many are independent of the home's electrical system. They can be placed anywhere there's an electrical connection. However, unexpected complications can sometimes arise due to the fact that different dryers operate differently.

Owners of Miele dryers note that they are virtually silent and don't increase humidity levels in the room. Users of cheaper dryers, on the other hand, complain of noise and moisture release, which can lead to mold growth. In a small closet, such dryers can break down. High humidity can also damage items stored in the room.

Overheating can be the cause of a dryer failure when operating in a confined space.

Predicting the moisture output of an inexpensive dryer is very difficult. Typically, owners discover this in practice, after purchasing the appliance. If it turns out that operating the appliance in a walk-in closet is unsafe, it must be moved to another location or an additional exhaust hood installed.

Dryer placement options

Connecting a dryer is easy. Difficulties often arise when choosing the installation method and location. Owners may prefer one of the following options:

• above the washing machine;
• in a pre-prepared plasterboard niche;
• next to the washing machine;
• under the sink and countertop in the bathroom or in the kitchen.

Installing a dryer above a washing machine saves space and makes washing and drying clothes easier. It's also convenient for the owner to transfer wet items from one drum to the other. The dryer can be placed in living spaces or utility rooms. There are several mounting options:

• using the fasteners supplied with the dryer;
• using rails that are mounted above the washing machine.

The second method is rarely used. It is considered more reliable to use fasteners that are supplied with the machine. To install it, you need to follow the following instructions:

• Level the washing machine. Ideally, it should be on a flat concrete or tile surface;
• Install a dryer stand above the washing machine. Place rubber seals between them to significantly reduce vibration. Secure the stand with bolts.
• Place the dryer on the stand. Make sure the machine's feet fit snugly into the grooves;
• hide the recesses on the mount using plugs, which are usually also included in the kit.

When placing a washing machine and dryer vertically, one above the other, it is necessary to follow installation rules and safety precautions.

Important! Do not install devices this way without special fasteners.

In addition, vertical installation of equipment requires knowledge of a number of rules.

1. Before placing machines one above the other, you need to calculate the load on the wall.
2. Do not use fasteners of dubious quality.
3. It is prohibited to operate a dryer and a washing machine at the same time, even if the owner is sure that the fastenings and wiring are secure.
4. It is necessary to take into account the strong vibration of the dryer during operation and provide a gap of 2–3 cm between the body of the device and the wall.
5. If possible, it's best to buy the same brand of washing and drying equipment. This way, you won't have to worry about the mounting hardware; they'll fit perfectly.
6. If you can't buy a washing machine and dryer from the same manufacturer, it's best to select them based on their dimensions. They should be identical.
7. You cannot install a dryer under a washing machine, which vibrates more and weighs more.

The equipment located below must not be smaller than the device installed above.

It's much easier to install a washer and dryer side by side. The only drawback to this placement option is the need for more floor space. Typically, line-ups are best in spacious apartments or houses. This placement allows for efficient use of space. For example, you can build a long countertop and hang cabinets or shelves above it. Installing the appliances is simple. Simply check the level and adjust the feet to the desired height.

A separate niche made of plasterboard can be installed for the dryer. This installation method is more expensive financially, requires the purchase of building materials and the invitation of a specialist. But this allows you to harmoniously integrate household appliances into the interior of an apartment or house.

Sometimes dryers are installed under bathroom sinks, with countertops placed over them. This option isn't suitable for small spaces. However, installation is easy. Simply connect the dryer to the plumbing and ventilation systems.

Regardless of the installation method chosen by the owner, it's important to ensure the availability of utilities and assess their location. The room must have grounded outlets, as well as access to sewer pipes and ventilation. When choosing a location for the dryer, consider the specifications and dimensions of the appliance, as well as the size of the living space or utility room.
