A specialized bearing puller is a rather specialized tool, not found in every repairman's kit, let alone the average person's. Most often, washing machine bearings are removed with a simple hammer and punch, but if the bearing is deformed or rusty, knocking it out becomes an impossible task. In this case, it's better not to risk your washing machine's tub and instead make your own bearing puller. We'll explain how difficult it is to create one at home.
Materials and tools for the puller
First of all, it is worth noting that such work should not be carried out in residential premises. The best place to create a tool is a garage or workshop, where there is a workbench, a vice, an anvil, and other simple equipment.
To make a bearing puller, you'll need a hammer, pliers, an angle grinder with a cutting and grinding wheel, a drill, a ruler, a caliper, wrenches, and an electric welder with electrodes. As for consumables, you'll need a strip of metal approximately 20 centimeters long and 1 millimeter thick, as well as threaded studs with hex nuts.
A simple and effective homemade puller
Once everything is prepared, you can begin creating the tool. Follow the instructions carefully to create a high-quality device that can be used in your work.
First, you need to prepare the hooks. Cut a piece of metal strip and mark the two pieces on it, as shown in the photo.
Next, you need to carefully cut out the parts themselves.
Now they need to be finished with a regular grinding wheel.
Afterwards, carefully drill holes in the parts, thereby preparing the hooks.
Return to the metal strip again to cut out another piece with it, and then cut grooves in the edges of it to accommodate the hooks.
On the upper section of the plate, it is necessary to weld special ears, which are necessary for fixing the hooks.
Alternatively, you can weld regular hex nuts to the element.
Next, weld a guide nut for the threaded rod to the bottom section of the plate directly below the hole.
Now you need to cut out another plate from the prepared strip, and then drill three holes in it.
A threaded pin must be installed in the center so that it presses on the hooks from above, thus moving them in different directions.
Install thrust pins into the other two holes.
At this point, the homemade device is complete and almost ready to be used for repairs. You can also carefully clean the welds and paint the puller to improve its appearance, but this is not necessary. The most important thing is that the tool performs its primary function.
A removable device made of a bolt and several pieces of iron
A simple puller can also be made from an ordinary bolt and a couple of iron parts. This tool won't be as convenient as the one in the previous section, but it's much easier and faster to make. What is needed for such a removable device?
Old bolt.
A few nuts.
A pair of washers.
A small piece of round steel pipe.
Angle grinder.
Vice.
Electric welding.
Wrenches.
Pliers.
If everything is ready to go, you can begin creating your homemade instrument. What do you need to do?
Using a grinder, cut the old bolt into two halves as shown in the image.
Then clamp both parts of the part in the chuck of a drill or screwdriver and use an angle grinder and a flap wheel to grind down the edges on the head.
The cap needs to be ground down until its diameter becomes slightly larger than the diameter of the bolt leg.
Cut off the excess portion of the bolt head.
Now you need to cut a narrow strip of metal that is necessary to fit between the halves of the bolt, thereby wedging them apart.
At this stage, you need to prepare a small piece of steel pipe along with a washer.
Weld them together to form a kind of cylinder for the bearing.
Place the cylinder on the seat where the bearing is installed.
Insert the bolt into the bearing hole and then wedge it to begin threading the nut.
This way you will be able to unscrew the bolt, the end of which will lift the bearing.
Since unscrewing the bolt stem by hand is not very convenient, it's worth cutting off the top side edges and welding a nut there. This will allow you to install a makeshift puller, unscrew the nut, and quickly push it out. washing machine bearing outward.
