How to use dishwasher tablets?
Dishwasher tablets are the most popular product among consumers. They're easy to use, don't require dosing, and replace salt and rinse aid. Simply put, they're multifunctional, offering three, five, or even ten functions, according to manufacturers. However, not all consumers understand where to place these tablets in the machine or how many are needed for a single cycle. The instructions may not provide this information, so we'll explain everything in detail.
Where is the pill compartment located?
To avoid confusion about where the tablet compartment is located and where to place it in your specific dishwasher model, take the time to read the instructions first. If this information isn't available, carefully inspect the inside of the dishwasher. In most dishwasher models, the detergent compartments are located on the inside of the door. One of these compartments (marked F in Figure 1) is screwed on with a lid C, which may have a flower on it. This compartment is used for rinse aid. In some machines, a rinse aid indicator light D may be located next to the rinse aid dispenser.
Compartment 2 is the main compartment for detergents. This is where powder, gel, or tablets are poured. Compartment 3 is designed for a small amount of detergent, about 5 g of powder or gel, for the pre-wash cycle.

In some models of machines, for example in Bosch dishwashers, the compartments are arranged differently Figure 2. In this figure, number 1 indicates the compartment for powder or gel, number 2 indicates the compartment for rinse aid, and number 3 indicates the compartment for tablets.
Some dishwashers prohibit the use of combination tablets (3-in-1, 5-in-1, or others). However, you can use regular tablets; there's a small tablet holder on the top rack for this purpose, as shown in the photo below. When using regular tablets or with very hard water, it is essential to use salt., A how much and where to sprinkle it We talked about this in one of our articles.

To open or not to open the package
Before using dishwasher tablets, read the instructions on the tablet box. There are many different types and brands of tablets, so they may vary from one tablet to another. This is crucial. Each tablet is packaged in a sealed container, which may be soluble or insoluble. If the packaging is insoluble, the tablet will not dissolve, so open the container before use.
Please note! Soluble packages are usually transparent and do not have any cuts or opening lines. Tablets wrapped in foil must be opened.
Here is an example of tablets with dissolving packaging:
- Finish Quantum;
- Sun All in one;
- Sodasan;
- Dish Drops.
Tablets with non-dissolving wrappers:
- Somat;
- OXO Family;
- Frosch;
- Econta;
- Ecover.
How does the pill work?
Dishwasher tablets may vary in composition, and therefore their performance will vary. However, their basic functions are all the same. Most combination tablets contain detergent, salt, and rinse aid. Additional components, which may or may not be included, include:
- substances that protect metal from corrosion;
- substances that protect silverware from tarnishing;
- antibacterial and disinfectant components;
- bleaching agents;
- antifoam agents;
- flavorings, etc.
After starting the washing program, at a certain point in time, a tablet falls out of the compartment and begins to dissolve layer by layer. First, a layer of salt and detergent is dissolved, the entire process lasts during the washing stage. Before the final rinsing stage, the third layer (the red ball in Finish tablets) dissolves. It happens that the tablet doesn't dissolve at all, and only falls out of the compartment after the wash cycle is completed, when the door is opened. This may be because some dishes are blocking the compartment lid from opening, preventing the tablet from falling into the dishwasher tank.
Important! Do not crush the tablet, as this will not be effective, as the mouthwash will dissolve during the initial step.
The nuances of using tablets
Let's take a closer look at the nuances of using dishwasher tablets. Many people wonder how long they last and how many tablets are needed for one wash. The answer is simple: one dishwasher tablet is enough for one full load, which is approximately 10 to 15 place settings. Many dishwasher users have found that for a half-load, half a tablet is sufficient. Also, half a tablet is enough to wash dishes in a compact (small) dishwasher.
Another important consideration when using tablets is choosing the right wash cycle. Some modern dishwasher models specify the cycles in which 3-in-1 tablets can be used. These cycles are typically long cycles, at least one hour.
Please note: Tablets cannot be used for pre-soaking or rinsing.
It is very important to follow the storage conditions when using tablets. And they must be stored in a dry place out of the reach of children. If the tablets are coated with a soluble film, they may stick together if exposed to moisture. Therefore, handle the tablets only with dry hands.
So, using dishwasher tablets is very convenient, but it's important to know how to do it correctly to maximize their effectiveness. We hope our article has helped clarify this.
