How to extend a dishwasher drain hose
Before purchasing a new appliance, we always carefully measure the space we plan to install it. But no one is immune to the situation where the hose on a new dishwasher turns out to be slightly short, making it insufficient to connect to the drain. In such an unfortunate situation, experts recommend either buying a new drain hose or simply finding a new location for your "home helper." But why waste time and money disassembling the appliance just to remove the old hose and connect a new one? It's much easier to extend your dishwasher's drain hose at home.
How to attach the hose?
Extending a dishwasher hose is a simple process that even a novice can handle. Everything you need to do is easily described in a few simple steps.
- You need to measure the diameter of the drain hose and the length that is missing to the point where it connects to the drain.
- In the store, you should buy an extension hose of the required length along with a plastic connector, which looks like a small tube with a limiting protrusion in the middle.

- All that remains is to connect the original hose with the extension hose and connector.
It is important to remember that the resulting hose should not be too long, otherwise the distance will become an additional obstacle to the water supply, the risk of blockages will increase, and the load on the pump will also increase.
Any of the three steps listed won't take much time, so you can complete the entire procedure yourself in half an hour. Just follow our instructions.
- Take the free end of the dishwasher drain hose and the plastic connector.
- Place a metal or plastic clamp over the end of the hose, then attach the end of the connector to the sleeve.
- Attach the end of the extension hose along with the clamp to the second end of the plastic connector.
- Secure the structure by firmly securing the resulting hose with clamps.
This way, we quickly extended the dishwasher drain hose, which now easily reaches the drain.
Connecting the dishwasher hose to the sewer
There are several ways to connect a dishwasher's drain hose to the sewer system. One is using a trap. This installation requires the dishwasher hose to be connected not to the sewer pipe, but to another plumbing component—the sink trap. Many traps today have an additional outlet built into them, specifically for dishwashers or washing machines. How do you use it correctly?
- Install the siphon on the sink.
- Check its functionality and the absence of leaks.
- Connect the dishwasher drain hose to the side outlet of the trap.
If necessary, you can purchase a siphon with two outlets at once in order to connect a washing machine to it as well.
- Seal the joint thoroughly.
- Be sure to bend the hose into an "S" shape to ensure proper water drainage and to prevent your appliance from freezing mid-cycle.

If you don't have a trap, you can use a regular sewer pipe branch if it's located near the dishwasher. If you have a pipe but don't have a branch, you can make one yourself.
- We buy a regular tee for a sewer pipe.
- Using a manual pipe cutter, pipe scissors or any other suitable tool, cut the required plastic pipe.
- We attach the tee and then carefully seal the joint.
This completes the installation of the elbow. Place it only at a height greater than 40 centimeters above the floor. Now all that remains is to insert the end of the drain hose into the newly installed tee and then seal the resulting structure. For safety, you can also secure the connection with a metal clamp to prevent the pipe from popping out of the elbow due to high water pressure. Don't forget to make an "S" bend in the hose to prevent the dishwasher from having drainage problems while it's running.
