Overview of 45 cm built-in dishwashers

45 cm dishwashersModern built-in appliances have become very popular due to the unique and stylish way they can create a kitchen interior. As for dishwashers, the 45 cm wide integrated dishwasher is the most popular.

It does an excellent job of washing dishes while fitting into the limited space of small kitchens in Soviet-era buildings. In this article, we'll review these dishwashers, comparing their technical specifications and other features.

Features of narrow dishwashers

Built-in dishwashers with a width of 45 cm are only available as floor-standing models. Based on installation type, they are classified as either semi-integrated or fully integrated. Fully integrated models are completely concealed behind cabinetry, creating a seamless unit. Examples include the Bosch SPV53M00, Bosch SPV58M50, Hansa ZIM 428EN, and Siemens SR66T099 dishwashers. Semi-integrated models feature a control panel and display located on the front of the cabinet, such as:

  • Smeg PLA4525X,
  • Bosch SPI 50X95,
  • Kaiser S45U71XL,
  • Miele G4700SCI.

All built-in dishwashers with a width of 60 and 45 cm have a special feature: when installed under the countertop, it is necessary to lay a metallized film, which will protect the furniture from exposure to humid air.

When it comes to models, there are so many 45 cm wide dishwashers that it can be difficult to choose. There are dozens of manufacturers alone. These include familiar names like Bosch, Siemens, Miele, Hotpoint-Ariston, Hansa, AEG, Whirlpool, and Candy. And lesser-known names like Flavia, Korting, Neff, Kuppersbusch, De Dietrich, and Bomann. Each manufacturer strives to produce a series of models with distinct features.

The exact dimensions of narrow built-in dishwashers are as follows: width 44.5-45 cm, height 81-85 cm, depth 54.2-62 cm. If you're looking for a more compact 45 cm wide model, such a built-in dishwasher doesn't exist. A compact built-in dishwasher has the following dimensions: width 55-60 cm, height 48-60 cm, depth 46-60 cm. A compact 45 cm model does exist, but it would be a freestanding countertop model.

Please note! Oven baking sheets measuring 55 x 60 cm are not dishwasher-safe.

Design and color

The color and design of a built-in dishwasher aren't particularly important, and what color would it be if the decorative walls and front of the cabinet are simply missing? In a partially built-in dishwasher, the control panel is visible, but its color is unlikely to matter. There are dishwashers

  • with a gray control panel (Smeg PLA4525X, Bosch SPI 50X95, Bomann GSPE 874),
  • black panel (Kuppersbusch IG 4407.0 GE, Kaiser S 45 E 70 XLW)
  • and white (Miele G 4700 SCi, De Dietrich DVY 430 WE1).

Engine type and noise levels

Narrow, built-in dishwashers are typically equipped with motors that produce 55-48 dB of noise during operation. These dishwashers include:

  • Bosch SPV 40E10 – 52 dB;
  • Kuppersberg GSA 489 – 48 dB;
  • Siemens SR 64M030 – 48 dB.

Of course, there are quiet models that users prefer:

  • Bosch SPV 53M00 – 46 dB;
  • Bosch SPV 40E10 – 44 dB;
  • Siemens SR 66T090 – 44 dB;
  • Siemens SR 66T097 – 43 dB.

Please note! The motor installed in a dishwasher can be either inverter or brushed. Inverter motors are considered more reliable and durable.

It is difficult to say whether there is a direct relationship between the type of engine and the noise produced. Some people believe that an inverter motor is quieter, but whether this is actually true remains to be proven.

Capacity, quality and economy

Let's move on to more important characteristics. How much dishware can a dishwasher hold? Narrow models can accommodate up to 9 place settings, while models with a pull-out spoon and fork tray instead of a basket can hold 10 place settings, and some even 12 (AEG F 65402 VI). To optimize the loading of dishes inside the dishwasher and thereby make it more ergonomic, manufacturers are constantly modernizing the dishwasher's containers.

Some models feature attachments, collapsible elements, and height-adjustable containers, all while maintaining the same dimensions. For example, German manufacturers Bosch and Siemens have implemented the Rackmatic system in their dishwashers, which allows the upper basket to be locked in one of two positions. The difference between these positions is 5 cm. Some models feature the Rackmatic-3 system, allowing the basket to be installed in three positions with a 2.5 cm height difference, such as the Bosch SPV58M50RU dishwasher.

One of the components of high-quality dishwashing is not only the proper placement of the dishes but also the design of the spray arms. The spray arms are located at the top and bottom of the dishwasher. The shape and placement of the water outlet holes may vary across different models. It is best when these holes have different diameters and are located at different angles, which allows water to enter different areas of the chamber.

Built-in dishwashers from Siemens and Bosch feature a dual-rotating spray arm located at the top. This technology reduces water consumption by 20% without compromising cleaning performance. The Siemens SF 25M250 RU and Siemens SF 24T257 RU models feature an alternating water supply.

Important! The quality of the detergents used greatly impacts the quality of the cleaning results. Almost all modern dishwashers are equipped with drawers for both regular detergents and 3-in-1 tablets.

The efficiency of a dishwasher depends on the amount of water and electricity consumed. There are models with low water consumption of about 7 liters (Siemens SR 64M002), but there are very few of them. Typical consumption is 9 liters per wash cycle, although models with consumption of 11 and 13 liters are available. In terms of energy consumption, slimline dishwashers are comparable to full-size models and have energy ratings of A+ and even A++. Most dishwashers consume 0.84-0.9 kWh. It's worth noting that machine size doesn't significantly affect energy or water consumption.

Functionality and management

Now let's talk about the programming "insides" of narrow dishwashers and their various features. Most models have 5-6 programs. Different manufacturers have different names for these programs, but the most common ones include:

  • Quick wash (30-40 minutes);
  • Economical (suitable for dishes with medium soiling, washing takes place at 550WITH);
  • Normal (everyday);
  • Automatic (sensors and sensors automatically determine how dirty the water is and the number of items loaded, which allows you to save water and electricity);
  • Intensive;
  • Soaking or rinsing.

Not all models have a delicate cycle for washing crystal and other tableware. For example, the popular Bosch SPV 58M50 and Siemens SR 66T090 models lack it. However, the Smeg STA4525 and AEG F 78400 VI dishwashers do feature a delicate cycle. A new feature is the Bio cycle, which breaks down dirt using bioactive detergents at low temperatures (AEG F 78400 VI and Gorenje + GDV530X).

Note! Elite dishwashers can have up to 10 wash programs, such as the Gorenje GDV530X and Smeg PLA4525X.

dishwasher 45 cmAdditional features are always appealing, but they're not always useful, so buyers aren't eager to pay for them. What are these features and why are they needed?

  • VarioSpeed and VarioSpeed Plus are features that, by increasing energy consumption and water flow rate, reduce washing times by 2-3 times while maintaining cleaning quality. This feature is found in Bosch, Siemens, and Neff washing machines.
  • IntensiveZone – This function washes dishes in the lower basket more intensively than those in the upper basket. This is achieved by varying the water flow rate and temperature in the corresponding zones.
  • Hygiene and Hygiene Plus treat dishes with hot water and steam, which kills germs and allergens. This feature is available in the Samsung DW50H4050BB dishwasher, as well as in Bosch models.
  • Half load is a load where you fill only one basket with dishes. This saves water and the wash time remains the same. Half of all fully integrated dishwashers, even inexpensive models, have this feature. However, it's worth noting that this feature is rarely used, as the dimensions of narrow dishwashers allow for a full load, and it's rare to have very few dishes.

The dishwasher is most often controlled via an electronic control panel. Machines with a touch panel are rare, for example, Samsung DMM 39 AHC. For convenience, the dishwasher is equipped with a small display that shows the duration of the program or fault codeIn addition, the control panel features indicator lights that inform you about the unit's operating status. The end of the wash cycle is indicated by an audible signal (Bosch SPV 40E10) or a red floor indicator (called a beam) (Electrolux ESL 4300 RO), or both simultaneously (Bosch SPV 53M00).

Another convenient control feature is the delayed start, allowing you to start the machine at any time. Some models offer a delay of 3, 6, 9, or 12 hours (Bosch SPV 40E10, Hansa ZIM 428 EH), while others offer a delay of 1 to 24 hours (Siemens SR 66T090).

Drying type and safety

Fully integrated and semi-integrated dishwashers are equipped with either condensation or turbo drying. The former involves rinsing the dishes in hot water and allowing them to cool gradually. The condensed steam runs down the walls of the dishwasher into a special container. This drying process takes a relatively long time but is also economical. Turbo drying, which uses hot air supplied by a fan, is less common, and is found, for example, in the Miele G 4700 SCi and AEG F 88410 VI dishwashers.

A dishwasher's safety system should include full leak protection and child safety. To prevent children from turning the dishwasher on, a special locking device is installed. Leak protection can vary:aqua-stop

  • Bosch and Siemens have Aqua-Stop;
  • Whirlpool has Waterproof;
  • Hansa has Aqua-Control;
  • Korting has Aqua-Safe;
  • AEG has Aqua-Alarm.

Important! If you like a particular dishwasher model, but it only offers partial protection, purchase a separate hose that offers full leak protection. It's better to replace the hose than pay for a flood.

How much money do you need?

Finally, one important factor is the price of 45 cm wide dishwashers. Compared to full-size ones, they offer the same features and are $50–$70 cheaper. The following factors influence the price:

  • capacity (number of sets);
  • noise level, the less noise, the higher the price;
  • energy efficiency class, the higher the more expensive;
  • number of additional options and new technologies;
  • The design of the baskets: the simpler the baskets, the cheaper the equipment.

Please note: The presence of a heat exchanger usually does not affect the price of a dishwasher.

Here are the prices for some popular models listed in our review; of course, they change as quickly as the price of a dollar.

  • Bosch SPV53M00 – $400.
  • Miele G 4700 SCi – $1100.
  • Hansa ZIM 428 EH – $230.
  • Smeg PLA4525X – $770.
  • Siemens SR 66T097 – $700.
