What to do if your washing machine catches fire?
Like any household electrical appliance, a washing machine can catch fire. This is not uncommon not only in Russia but also in other countries around the world. Naturally, when a fire occurs, especially one of this kind, panic sets in, which exacerbates the consequences of the accident. So what should you do if your washing machine catches fire to prevent the situation from getting worse?
Why can equipment catch fire?
If you think carefully about how a washing machine works, it's easy to see why the risk of fire is so high. A washing machine is connected to the power grid, so the outlet, plug, power cord, and internal circuitry are all energized during operation. The machine operates in a humid environment, creating an explosive mixture that can cause a fire. Here are the most likely causes of failure.
- Poor quality of individual parts or the entire machine. As a rule, budget machines with even minor defects catch fire much more often than high-quality brand-name washing machines.
- Incorrect installation. The absence of a residual-current device (RCD) (if the power supply voltage exceeds the permissible limit, the device automatically shuts off the power) or grounding increases the risk of fire.
- Neglect of safety regulations.
- Unqualified repair.
- The owner's negligent attitude.
Everyone knows it's easier to prevent a fire than to put it out. So, keep a close eye on your home caregiver. Or at least, don't leave her unattended while she's working, such as when you're visiting or going to bed. A serious fire is preceded by certain signs, which, if noticed, can help prevent a fire caused by a washing machine.Among them:
- the smell of burning;
- clicking, crackling and other uncharacteristic sounds;
- presence of smoke.
If you notice any of these symptoms, immediately turn off the power and stop using the washing machine. Remember to follow safety precautions when doing so.
Emergency actions in case of fire
Don't rush to call the fire department. You can put out a fire that's just started on your own. As mentioned above, turn off the power. If you have an RCD, turn it off; if not, turn off the power to the entire house; nothing serious will happen.
- Be sure to unplug the power cord from the outlet with dry hands.
- If you see a real flame, find a thick blanket or something similar and cover the washing machine, cutting off the oxygen supply to the fire.
- If the above methods do not work and the situation worsens, call the fire department immediately and leave the apartment!
Important! If you notice signs of a fire, do not pour water on the washing machine or wave it at the flames; this may only make the situation worse. After completing these steps, try to close windows and doors to minimize air leakage.
What causes short circuits and fires?
In exceptional cases, any part can short-circuit, but experts identify several elements that are particularly at risk:
- the socket to which the washing machine is connected;

- wiring inside the machine itself, ensuring the smooth operation of the unit;
- an electric motor, and in particular its windings, which are sometimes exposed to water;
- contacts of the control board, network filter, heating element or drain pump.
There are, however, situations where a burning smell is present, but it doesn't necessarily indicate a fire hazard. This can happen in two situations: first, when the machine is brand new, and the plastic parts haven't yet gotten used to the heat. Second, when debris gets into the heating element. In this case, you should clean the heating element yourself or have it professionally cleaned as quickly as possible.
What should you do if you feel something is wrong with your machine? Consult a specialist, regardless of the suspected cause. Your washing machine may require urgent repair.
