Replacing the pressure switch for a washing machine (relay, level sensor)

Pressure switch for a washing machineReplacing the pressure switch is necessary when the washing machine is taking in too much water. This is the most common malfunction with these symptoms. Poor spin performance can also be related to this malfunction.

The pressure switch, also known as a relay and level sensor, is necessary to control the amount of water entering the machine's tank. If you've determined that this is the problem, you'll need to purchase a new level sensor to replace the faulty one.

How to choose and where to buy a level relay for a washing machine?

To buy exactly the pressure switch you need, you need to understand one simple thing: You need to purchase exactly the part that fits your washing machine model. To do this, you will need to clarify the exact full name of your household appliance.

In general, there are several types of level relays. More specifically:

  1. Three-pin
  2. And two-chamber

The relay is marked with a two-digit number. The first number represents the group number, and the second represents the contact number. You don't need to worry about these designations. Just remember the name and model of your washing machine.

You can purchase a new sensor at service centers that repair large household appliances. You can also purchase one online. To do this, use any search engine and find companies that sell spare parts for washing machines. Then simply give them a call.

How does a level sensor work?

Let's take a look at how the level switch in a washing machine works. Before starting any wash, you need to fill the tank with water. Water flows through the inlet hose from the water supply pipe into the washing machine's tub. As it fills, it flows into the dispenser, where it rinses away the laundry detergent or other detergent you use.

When the washing machine has enough water to complete a wash, the pressure switch notifies the control module. The control module, in turn, signals the machine to stop filling. If the level sensor fails, it doesn't notify the control module to stop filling. Thus, the machine continues to fill with water.

How to replace a pressure switch (level relay) yourself?

Replacing the pressure switch in a washing machineTo access the pressure switch, we'll need to remove the top of the washing machine. This is also known as the lid. The lid is secured with two screws located on the back of the machine. After unscrewing them, push the lid back from the front of the machine. This will release it from its grooves and allow it to be removed.

In most models of washing machines, the level sensor is located on the upper left side. To remove the pressure switch, you'll need to loosen the hose clamp and pull the hose off. Then, remove all the terminals and wires.

If you're worried about remembering the position of the wires, you can take a photo with your phone or camera before removing them.

Before installing the new pressure switch, make sure the terminals are free of any deposits and the hose is not clogged. If necessary, these parts can be cleaned additionally.

Next, remove the faulty level sensor and replace it with the purchased, working one. Then replace the lid and run a test wash. That's all there is to it. Now all that's left to do is wish you luck in replacing the pressure switch yourself!
