LG Washing Machine Door Handle Replacement
Replacing the door handle on an LG washing machine is quite simple. You don't need to call a technician to solve this problem. By following the step-by-step guide below, you'll easily replace the plastic element.
First open the door
When repairing an LG washing machine's handle, a user may encounter a major problem: difficulty opening the door. In most cases, the handle breaks when attempting to open the door at the end of the wash cycle. What should you do if you can't remove laundry from the drum?
To open a “jammed” hatch mechanically, you will have to access the lock through the top or bottom of the washing machine.
So, to open the door, you need to:
- unscrew the two screws holding the top cover of the case and remove it;
- tilt the machine body slightly backwards (this will cause the drum to move slightly to the side);
- put your hand into the hole, feel the lock and unlock it.
Similar manipulations can be performed through the bottom of the washing machine. Remove the bottom cover, if present, and release the door latch. You can also access items if the door handle is broken using a rope. Thread the rope between the washing machine body and the door. Then, pull it taut on both sides, applying pressure to the latch. The latch should open.
Removing the broken handle
Once the hatch is open, you can begin dismantling the element. Plastic handle of a washing machine LG cannot be repaired; you need to purchase a new part to reinstall the broken one. You can purchase the spare part at a specialized store by telling the consultant your washing machine model. To remove the handle, follow these steps:
- turn off the power to the washing machine, turn off the water intake tap;

- unscrew the door from the machine body (open the hatch and use a screwdriver to unscrew the two bolts holding the door);
- place the door on a flat surface with the glass facing up;
- unscrew the bolts holding the two parts of the hatch together;
- Use a screwdriver to release the latches located in a circle;
- remove the top and glass.
Now you'll only see the inner part. Before removing the handle, take a photo of it from both sides; this will help you avoid mistakes during reassembly. Using a thin screwdriver, push in the pin holding the mechanism in place. Once the pin is removed, the remaining components will be easy to disassemble and remove. To understand how to reassemble the washing machine handle, you need to know what it consists of:
- plastic handle;
- a pin that holds the structure together;
- spring;
- latch.
Once the entire mechanism has been removed, the new handle can be installed.
Even if only one element of the door handle has failed, the entire mechanism must be replaced.
We put the handle
The handle should be installed carefully, following the recommended assembly sequence. The sequence of steps for reinstalling the mechanism is as follows:
- put the spring back in place;
- place the retainer on the side of the spring;
- While holding the lock, begin installing the pin. It should not be inserted completely, but only pushed through one eye of the spring;
- Place the handle on the locking element and insert the pin all the way.
Next, you need to assemble the door. The glass is slid under the handle, and the outer part of the door is placed on top. The retaining latches are secured. The bolts connecting the two door halves are screwed in. Finally, all that remains is to reinstall the door on the LG washing machine.
