How to replace brushes on a Samsung washing machine
Loud noise and crackling sounds while your Samsung washing machine is running are a clear indication that the motor brushes are worn and need to be replaced. These components are essential for machines with brushed motors and require proper maintenance. This primarily involves regularly checking their integrity.
These parts are called brushes, but they're actually a carbon tip with a spring attached to it, housed in a plastic housing. Over time, the soft carbon wears down, requiring immediate replacement of the motor brushes to prevent overheating and damage to the motor. Removing the old brushes and installing new ones requires minimal tools and knowledge, making it possible to perform the repair yourself. Detailed instructions and recommendations are provided below.
First, let's remove the engine.
If worn carbon tips are not replaced promptly, the motor will fail after just a few washes. Installing a new motor is extremely expensive, while brushes are considerably less expensive. First, remove the motor, which contains the brushes. First, unplug the machine and ensure easy access to the back panel. Then, proceed with disassembly.
- Using a screwdriver, remove the back panel of the case.
- Pay attention to the bottom – the engine is located under the automatic transmission tank.
- We remove the drive belt (simultaneously turn the pulley and pull it towards ourselves).
- We release the electric motor from the belt.
- We mark the location of the appropriate conductors with a marker.
- We disconnect all the wires (pull the corresponding connectors).
- We unscrew the bolts or screws (three to four pieces) and carefully remove the motor. Be prepared for the engine to be heavy.
Important! It is recommended to document all actions taken with a series of photographs or notes in a notebook.
Removing the motor will require some effort: pull it toward you while simultaneously rocking it back and forth. After removal, inspect it and wipe off any dust if necessary. Now place the part on a flat, illuminated surface and begin disassembling the components.
We are making a replacement
In addition to the removed motor and the previously used screwdriver, you'll need new brushes. These are easily purchased at a service center or specialty store; just tell the consultant your Samsung washing machine model. Once everything is ready, follow these steps:
- turn the motor on its side and unscrew the fixing screws;
- we find the brushes, which are located on both sides of the body;
- We remove the brushes one by one by pressing the existing lever with a screwdriver.
Important! Remember, or better yet, take a photo of, which way the charcoal is beveled—if it's beveled incorrectly, the machine will spark.
Next, carefully inspect the components. If the protruding carbon is less than 1.5 centimeters, the problem is with the brushes; otherwise, the shaking and noise are caused by something else. Clean the motor surface with "zero" sandpaper and a rag, removing any scuffs, dust, and scratches. Securely screw in the new brushes (these components are always replaced in pairs, even if one is intact).
If you can't purchase full-size brushes in a special housing, you can replace just the carbon tab yourself. To do this:
- we disassemble the plastic shell, dividing it into two halves with our hands;
- we solder out the worn plate with a soldering iron, remove and straighten the spring;
- Next, take a new brush and measure its length, which should completely correspond to the case;
- We tin the contacts, clean them, straighten the wire, and, using the bronze guide as a guide, insert the carbon. All that's left to do is solder the wires and snap the housing into place.
The repair is completed by reinstalling the engine. To do this, refer back to the initial instructions and work backwards. The main thing is to tighten the fasteners tightly and check against the photographs and notes taken “before”.
The final step is testing: turn on the spin or quick wash cycle and listen carefully. It's likely that the motor will be quite loud at first until the brushes are properly installed. If you don't hear any unusual knocking or cracking sounds reminiscent of sand rubbing, the installation is correct.
Some useful tips
To ensure long-lasting brush replacement on your Samsung washing machine, and to avoid having to worry about them for the required five or seven years, it's important to keep a few recommendations in mind. If you don't ignore them, you'll likely be in for a long time without any repairs. Let's put together a list of these recommendations.
- Careful selection of parts. The best option is to remove damaged brushes and write down the brand of the washing machine and electric motor to show them at the store. A wide range of universal models is available, but it's best to choose original factory parts. It is not recommended to purchase used items.
- Symmetrical replacement. Brushes are replaced only in pairs, even if one is not damaged.
- Regular inspection. Installed wiper blades should be inspected every six months. The protruding tip should be longer than the critical mark of 1.5 centimeters.
- Gentle cycle. For the first 10-15 washes, don't overload the drum—the brushes need to get used to their new location.
- Constant monitoring. It's important to recognize the signs of faulty brushes, including sudden stoppages, unusual noises, poor spinning, and a burning smell.
Replacing damaged wiper blades yourself is not a difficult task, especially if you follow the instructions above and proceed with extreme caution. The key is to take your time, follow safety precautions, and purchase high-quality parts that are compatible with your specific model. However, if you're unsure, it's best to contact a service center.
