How to Replace the Bracket on an Electrolux Top-Loading Washing Machine
If you have an older Electrolux vertical washer, replacing the bearings on it will be much easier than replacing the bearings on a modern front-loading washing machine. Knowing how to use a screwdriver and wrench will make it easy to repair the machine yourself. We'll show you how to fix this problem.
Why is it time to change the caliper?
It's easy to tell if your Electrolux top-loading washing machine needs a replacement. A number of characteristic signs indicate this problem. These include:
- there are brown spots and stains on washed items (the laundry is stained by grease leaking from the bearing);
- the washing machine makes a lot of noise when running, you can hear knocking and grinding sounds, which get louder during the spin cycle;

- the machine vibrates much more than usual (this is due to the resulting play in the bearing);
- the drive belt periodically comes off or breaks (this happens due to the bearing getting stuck).
Replacing the support cannot be postponed, as this will lead to damage to the Electrolux washing machine's crosspiece.
While front-loading machines require complete disassembly, removal, and splitting of the drum to replace the bearings, Electrolux top-loading machines are much simpler. Simply remove the side panels and a few loose parts to gain access to the washing machine support.
The bearing is removed in one motion. Afterwards, all that's left to do is clean the mounting surface and install the new components. Let's take a look at everything step by step.
Changing the caliper yourself
If you start noticing symptoms during your washing machine operation that indicate a faulty caliper, don't rush to call a service center. A technician will charge several hundred dollars for the job, but you can save that money. To replace a bearing, you will need a minimal set of tools: a screwdriver or drill, a socket wrench, and a special tool for removing the caliper.
When performing repairs, it's important to follow safety precautions. Therefore, the first step is to de-energize the washing machine by unplugging it from the wall. Next, disconnect the washing machine from the mains and move it away from the wall. Ensure free access to all sides of the appliance.
The complete instructions for action will be as follows:
- unplug the washing machine from the power supply;
- close the shut-off valve before the washing machine;
- detach the drain and fill hoses from the body;
- Pull out the machine so that you can access it from all sides;
- Use a screwdriver or a power drill to unscrew the bolts holding the side walls of the case;
- remove the left and right walls and put them aside;

- remove the drive belt from the pulley;
- Use a socket wrench to loosen the pulley mounting bolt;

- remove the drum pulley from the axle;
- unscrew the bolt securing the axle to the caliper on the other side of the tank;
- remove the bolts securing the counterweight;

- remove the weight block from the tank;
- loosen the caliper (for this you will need a special key, as in the picture).

If the caliper is stuck to its seat, treat the element with WD-40 before removing it.
Further algorithm of actions:
- remove the bearing and the old sealing rubber;
- remove any dirt accumulated on the tank shaft with a damp cloth;
- clean the shaft and the surrounding area from rust;

- generously coat the seat with special grease (it comes with the caliper);
- put the seal on the shaft (make sure that the sealing rubber fits tightly, otherwise it will let water through);
- put the caliper back in place and tighten the element using a special key;

- tighten the caliper mounting bolt;
- screw the grounding in with a screw (there is a separate connector for this);
- put the drum pulley and counterweight back in place;
- Pull the drive belt over the drum wheel and engine pulley.
After this, the Electrolux vertical washer's frame is reassembled, with the side panels in place. Next, it's time to test the washing machine's operation by running a test cycle with no laundry in the drum. Ensure the washing machine doesn't rattle or leak. If the "home assistant" completes the cycle without any issues, the repair is complete.
If the belt keeps coming off, it's recommended to replace the rubber band along with the caliper. A stretched belt will continue to fall off even after installing a new bearing. Therefore, it's best to address this issue immediately.
A new support and sealing rubber are purchased for a specific washing machine model. To repair an Electrolux washing machine, it is better to purchase original components. You can order parts online from direct suppliers.
Thus, you can replace the caliper on an Electrolux vertical lift in just half an hour. No special skills are required. The main thing is to strictly follow the instructions and select the appropriate components.
