How to get rid of the gasoline smell in a washing machine

the smell of gasoline in the washing machineA washing machine can emit various odors if the operating instructions aren't followed. Not all of these odors are easily removed. Sometimes, it takes a lot of effort to get rid of the stench. If you don't know how to remove the smell of gasoline from your washing machine, then this article is for you.

Causes of odor

The smell of gasoline or another petroleum product in a washing machine drum can only appear in one way: clothes soaked in caustic substances were washed in the machine. Gasoline or kerosene is often used to remove greasy stains from clothing, but without rinsing the item afterward, housewives throw it in the machine and wash it at high temperatures. The result: the machine smells of gasoline.

Gasoline often gets on the clothing of drivers who accidentally spill fuel while refueling. Furthermore, clothing can become saturated with exhaust fumes, which are also quite persistent and corrosive and difficult to dissipate.

Remember! Items soaked in kerosene, gasoline, or diesel fuel should not be washed in a washing machine. Such items should first be soaked in cold water for several hours.

We use baking soda and vinegar

One of the most common methods for combating odors in a washing machine is a baking soda-based solution. This method involves pouring half a 400-gram packet of baking soda into the detergent compartment. Then, run any wash cycle, but only at a temperature no higher than 30 degrees Celsius. Do not add any items to the drum.

Important! Avoid boiling or washing at temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius, as the oily smell of gasoline will further ingrain the rubber parts of the machine.

cleaning a washing machine with vinegarTo enhance the effect of the empty wash, you can wash the rubber bands and the drain filter with baking soda manually. Most often, gasoline droplets remain in the rubber seal.

The second way to remove the odor is to run an empty wash cycle with white vinegar. This vinegar is not as concentrated as regular vinegar. Start the wash cycle and wait a few seconds. Then, pour a cup of vinegar into the detergent dispenser. Why not just pour it all in? The reason is that the drum fills with water in several stages, and to avoid rinsing the vinegar out of the drum, it's best to add it before the final fill.

The vinegar smell neutralizes the smell of gasoline, but remains in the washing machine for some time. However, vinegar evaporates quickly, so open the drum door and thoroughly ventilate the room where the appliance is located.

Factory funds

odor tabletsSpecial products, available in a wide selection at stores, are quite effective at combating various unpleasant odors. Here's what you can use:

  • Frau Schmidt cleaner – leaves behind a pleasant lemon scent;
  • Fine tablets from Well Done - after using this product, an unpleasant chemical smell remains, but it will quickly go away, the main thing is that it is able to kill the smell of gasoline and all germs;
  • Dr. Beckmann's product not only fights odors, but also scale and plaque.
  • Filtero is a product designed to remove limescale from washing machines, but it also effectively removes odors from the drum.

Use the above-mentioned substances only according to the instructions on the label. Each of them is dispensed in a specific volume, so please be careful.

Last resort: chlorine bleach

If, after trying all the above, you're still struggling to remove the gasoline smell, you'll have to resort to a last resort. Chlorine bleach is required for cleaning. However, this method may not be suitable for all washing machines. Check your machine's instructions for instructions on whether or not to use chlorine-based products.

If the hoses and pipes in your washing machine are plastic rather than rubber, you will cause less damage to the appliance. Also, when pouring bleach into the drum, dilute it according to the instructions first. Choose a wash cycle that doesn't exceed 30-40 degrees Celsius (86-104 degrees Fahrenheit). You don't need to bleach your clothes, and chlorine will remove the gasoline smell without much heat. After running the washing machine empty, run another empty cycle to rinse out any remaining bleach and its odor.

So, to avoid the hassle of trying to get rid of odor in your drum, carefully sort your items before washing. Otherwise, try each method one at a time; after a few empty runs, the odor will eventually disappear. You can test whether your items still smell after washing by washing old, unwanted clothes. Good luck!
