Symbols on the dishwasher

Dishwasher symbolsAfter purchasing a dishwasher, before starting it, the user must consult the manual to decipher all the symbols and icons on the control panel. It's not always easy to intuitively guess what each symbol means. Furthermore, selecting the wrong mode can not only affect the washing quality but also damage the dishes. If for some reason you don't have detailed instructions at hand, this article is for you.

Control Panel Icons: What They Mean

In built-in dishwashers, the control panel is located on the edge of the door. In most cases, all buttons are marked with small icons, such as a saucepan, a glass, a sun, and so on. These icons allow for a compact and neat arrangement of all necessary buttons. In freestanding dishwashers, the control panel is located on the front. In addition to small pictures, buttons are sometimes labeled, but in English, which not everyone can translate. Therefore, you have to refer to the instructions more than once until you remember all the symbols.

Let's look at the different symbols on different dishwashers. For example, the symbols on Bosch dishwashers.

Bosch dishwasher control panel

  • button under number 1 (pot on stand) – intensive wash program at 700For very dirty dishes, you can wash pans and pots;

  • buttons under number 6 (+ and – with the inscription h) – suggest selecting the time;

The program launch button is most often labeled “Start”, and the inscription “Reset 3 sec” means that the program is restarted when pressed for 3 seconds. In addition to the symbols indicating programs, there are also symbols on the indicators; they are the same on almost all dishwashers; you can read about their meaning in the article Bosch dishwasher indicators.

Let's look at the main designations of Hotpoint Ariston dishwashers:

Bosch dishwasher labeling

In addition to the symbols and markings on the dishwasher panel, some users are interested in the letter designations in their dishwasher names. Let's explore these markings using the Bosch SPV 53m00ru dishwasher as an example.

The first symbol, S, stands for spueler, which means that this Bosch machine is designed for washing dishes, and therefore all dishwashers have this symbol. The second letter is the dishwasher generation and its width. There may be six of them:

  • R – narrow machine (45 cm) of the old generation;
  • P – narrow machine (45 cm) of new generation;
  • G – full-size (60 cm) old generation machine;
  • M – full-size (60 cm) new generation machine;
  • B – a high full-size machine with a height of 86.5 cm and a width of 60 cm;
  • K is a compact dishwasher of the new generation.

Please note! Different generations of dishwashers have different parts and water supply systems, which affects repairs.

The third symbol indicates the type of dishwasher depending on the installation:

  • S – freestanding;
  • I – partially built-in;
  • V – fully built-in;
  • U – partially built-in with stainless steel door front.

The next number in the marking indicates the model's configuration. It ranges from 4 (basic configuration) to 6 (with a wide range of programs). The next number indicates the model's configuration within a specific series of machines; for example, 8 indicates whether the machine has a pull-out cutlery tray.

The next letter indicates the dishwasher class, of which there are five:Bosch SPV 53m00ru

  • E – junior;
  • N – lowest;
  • M – medium;
  • T – highest;
  • U – premium.

The next two numeric characters are information for the manufacturer. And the last two letters indicate which market the model was produced for. RU – for Russian, EU – for European.

In our example, the Bosch SPV 53m00ru dishwasher, judging by the markings, is a new-generation fully integrated machine with a width of 45 cm. It has additional features, as its configuration is higher than the basic one, placing it in the mid-range class. This model is available on the Russian market.

To summarize, we note that most of the symbols found on the control panel of dishwashers of different brands are similar. Most of them represent a wash mode (main, intensive, quick) or a function (drying, half load, delayed start). Be careful when pressing unfamiliar buttons; we hope this article will help you figure them out.

    Good article. Thank you very much!

    But I still don’t understand what the numbers 88 mean for this Bosch SPS69T88eu model.
    It’s just that when I was choosing, there were two similar models, the difference was only one number.
    SPS69T88eu and SPS69T78eu, so the one with the number 78 is $50 cheaper.
    So I became curious: what do the last numbers mean?

  3. Gravatar Sergey Sergey:

    Okay, that's clear. What do the numbers after the "/" mean? For example, spv69t70ru/14 or spv69t70ru/17?
